Honestly, I don't think there is a "worst" faction. This game is quite good at giving potential to each and every faction. They all have a nice` which they can excell at, either in regards to the cosmopolitan aspect, the world-map/campaign aspect, or the battle-map aspect.

Scotland definitely doesn't have a ton going for it, but they are positioned such that a strong, aggressive, smart player can be a thorn in many sides until they are ready to face the cavalry armies with their pikes, etc.

They obviously have weaknesses, but so do all factions. I really think it is the player who makes it the worst, not the faction. For example, HRE is probably my worst faction, second to Moors, for many reasons. I just can't play them right. But, many people can, and do very well with them.

Scotland is the best faction. Freedom!!!

And Mithrane is right. Personally my worst faction would be.....Turks. Nevre played far with them, got bored. Maybe because of their crappy economy until later.

I don't like playing Scotland, but I certainly won't go so far as to say they're "the worst" faction. I don't think there is a bad faction. You just need to know how to play the faction.

I do poorly with the islamic factions. relying mainly on heavy cav and mounted achers, strangely enough, is difficult for me, even though by all rights they should rule. it just does not fit with my play style. i keep cav in reserve and use mounted archers only to harass and lure. 80% of action on the field is with heavy infantry. i dunno, just me.

edit: which means i suck big time with egypt and the moors but i can do somewhat ok with the turks. i suppose if i played these 3 factions as often as the european ones i would be just as proficient but... i dont. heh.

for me, i have no desire to play 1. the moors (obvious) 2. scotland (pikes galore, limited cavalry, and no gunpowder units like at all) and 3. spain (i LIVE off of heavy infantry, not some crappy javelins)

I have not played all of the factions.

I agree with Mithrane that there is not a particular worst faction. My personal play style makes the northern Italians (including HRE) the most challanging/worst performance.

I tend towards a slow, chivalric, and build up the economy method. Should be ideal for the northern Italians, but I never seem to move on the offensive at the right time. I guess this means more playing time until I get it right!!

I really dont understand how spain lacks heavy infantry. thats just weird. U know they get DFK...thats good enough and a lot of factions cant get better. Then u could get DCK and eventually dismounted conquistadores. Also sword and buckler men and the alumgavers or whatever they are may be technically light infantry but they are strong enough to function as heavy infantry just fine.take skirmish off the As and just pretend they are zweihanders and u actually will see them perform about as well haha.

1. Moors. Crappy roster. Who needs 300 different spears? Barely any armor on those guys either. Their heaviest cavalry is "Arab Cavalry"... before they get christian guards anyways.

2. Egypt. Sucks as well. At least before Kingdoms, then they're not so bad.

3. Scotland. Really hard spot, could've been Novgorod or Poland or Hungary as well...

I'm a beast with Scotland. Anything with a lot of infantry choices I love to play as. But cavalry focused teams I do poorly with, unless they have a good economic area to start with. Like Russia.

Several posters have listed Sicily ... I love Sicily because they can go anywhere from their starting position.
You can jump into the fray in Northern Italy or crusade against the Moors, take on Byzantium or just build huge navies and pick off weak sisters around the Med ...
I dislike factions that are forced by geography to fight the same battles almost every game (Scotland, Denmark, Egypt).
