    Default Repubblica di Genova minimod

I think this awesome mod would become even better if it worked a little on this almost unknown faction which had a great weight in european politics, far more than Milan or others did. i talked to lorre already about the possibility of creating a few new units like the galley prisoners and the genoese galleys.. nothing so elaborate to take away months of work.

whoever doesn't believe the genoese were extraordinary ship builders i remind them that a good part of the christian ships at lepantus were genoese (almost 1/3), the doge Andrea d'Oria was one of the best admirals who crossed the mediterranean sea and even the Count of Montecristo in Dumas' romance in the 1800's went to genoa to get his ship built (and the fame of the city's craftsman was utterly famous worlwide since the crusades, during which thew genoese were involved in transportation and combat on land and sea). i hope i will get many responses since this mod is one of the few who has the historic accuracy most other mods should have.

You forgot Christopher Columbus... Genoa does have unique units for instance genoese guards are a great halberd unit and genoese crossbowmen are the best in the game! Its really pretty well known aswell amongst the tw community!

I do think their prospects going forward are very solid."

yes it does but we were thinking to add just a couple more to enhance the interest in the faction.. by the way many think columbus was spanish i'm not kidding in fact his family came from terra rubra near chiavari and moved in genoa for commercial reasons. and others told me that genoa was part of hre when in fact the first commende (the ones from which the municipal guard hired) were founded in 945 and during the crusades the genoese galleys hoisted the st. george cross and not the imperial eagle.. and genoa remained independent throughout the late 1700's

My recommendation is, that you wait with any activities on the upcoming updated mod.
Besides this, you need the permission to do sub- or minimods by the mod leader (but i guess your approach is welcome)

of course ! by the way i have got no idea of how to mod stuff so i'm not able to do anything even with someone's permission.. i opened the thread just to see the opinions of Sicilian Vespers and the other players' one maybe someone could think my idea is not worth working on since in some way genoa has politics and colony handling similiar to venice

Suggestions are always appreciated, so feel free. I really like the idea of Genoese and Venetian Galleys, etc...

lorre told me that you've already talked about the creation of genoese galleys but since the game doesn't have a real naval warfare the idea was discarded. Probably changing a few stats, adding some extra info and a picture for the window could be a good improvement without too much work. perhaps merging the simple galleys and the war ones could be a good idea.
as far as the buonavoglia, the galeotti and the slaves lorre can tell you more than i know since i just downloaded some info from the net and i will read it asap. anywas they should be lightly armoured assault troops with high attack and low resistance to melee, like the no-dachi samurai of shogun total war. armed with axe and sword perhaps
anyways my idea was adding a few units so the work will not be too hard, discarding in the rinascimento campaign some classical units such as the 2 militia units (italian and spear) and replacing them with genoese urban militia, the one you and lorre created, so the quality should replace the quantity (as i think it really was for the italian comuni) and leaving the two classical militia units only in colonies. in my rinascimento campaigns i noticed i rarely used them in combat anyways prefering the pikeman and the heavier guys.
Lorre wanted to add the polcevera infantry, but he wasn't so sure about it since it was created around 1550. I bet we can work things out and maybe add something else if the idea isn't ok with everyone
ANYWAYS THESE ARE JUST SUGGESTIONS; I DON'T ABSOLUTELY WANT TO PISS SOMEONE OFF WITH MY IDEAS
I'm sending some pictures so everyone can have an idea of what i have in mind

the ones in front line are two buonavoglia

You haven't pissed anyone off. I have been extremely busy in RL, so haven't had much time to reply to everything.

You are doing it exactly right, throw ideas out and inspire us to improve them mod.

BTW, have you used the Genoese Guard? In my Darkage tests, as the Regnum Italicum, I have been placing them in the alpine forts.

I am able to hold off a vastly larger army with one Guardia Comunale (temporary darkage rename, until something better comes along), a Stipendarii Pedites (Merc Spearmen), and two levy archers.

I think they may be one of the best units in the game

i think pikemen+genoese guard+some mercs (cavalry and arquibousiers) are the strongest combination in the game, perhaps even too strong: the spears hold always the line while the cavalry manouvres from the sides. if you have artillery the battle is virtually won from the start

i was thinking about the possibility of using the dialect name for units and transalating in the text below as it is done for the other units such as the sipahis or the ghulams. perhaps lorre could help. also using latin names is a good idea, but the specific language for the italian units could give them a more exotic touch. consider that almost every city in italy has its dialect, and every region has a differnt dialect + different accent

I think making the Venetian Galeazza (gunpowder ship) and the Genoese Galley (pre-Gunpowder ship) both with little boost on stats should be a very good idea.

Genoese and venetians factions should have good control of the sea, until the Otoman Empire rises in Renaissance Campaign, I guess.

I would have really enjoeyd naval battles such those foreseen in Empire Total War
But I think we have to be satisfied with what we have here.

BTW genoese guard is really powerful, maybe too much... Probably that unit should be expensive to build, to limit a bit its use. I don't play m2 since a long time, I'll have to check the cost.

the cost of the genoese militia is low, but enhancing its price too much could create economic problems for the small italian comuni. a price around 600-700 could be good, perhaps enhancing a little the defence stats, which are anyhow excellent. i like the idea of the galleys and galeazze, it's historically accurate. at lepantus the 5 venetian galeazze held the battle line alone for some time, so this should be considered. i was wondering if we could add some Noli militia and, since for some time the town's power was considerable. some historian think it was the 5th marine republic with venice, genoa, amalfi and pisa. A guy who is very found of history also told me that camogli was famous for its slavers. maybe this could be a good a good idea for a special battle unit like the hungarian battlefield assassins
