Default Why is it so hard to get my Balearic Slingers on a wall!?

Heres the situation.Im defending Massalia as Carthage from the Romans(who have just back stabbed me)...im out numbered 2 to 1 and my reinforcement army, which includes my Balearic slingers and a hell of a lot of mercs and is led by my faction heir commander Hamalcar .

i keep my defending forces holding the square, cos they are pitiful gauls and they are ounumbered.my releiving force comes through the side gate but when i try to position my slingers on the walls they just stand there looking like a bunch of muppets(and not this kind)How do i prevent this as i need them to open the gates,to let my cavalry in behind the romans to massacre them, and also rain stony death on the romans from an elevated position(more damage me thinks)?

it may be that their formation is too wide to accomadate them on the wall. There is nothing to be done in this case.

I have the same problem with my Early Legionary Cohorts, too many of them. they run up and down the bottom of the enemy wall Entrance before they actually decide to enter the door.

I didn't think that slingers could fire from walls. :hmmm:

The problem might be with how EB has designated Slingers basic formation.

Compared to some other mods I've played, EB's slingers, and peltests are extremely spread out even when in "standard/tight" formation, which might making it impossible to position them on a wall., no matter how far lengthwise you spread them.

Yup, we did do this on purpose for two reasons. One: slingers were too effective and this reduces their tactical effectiveness nicely. Two: the flat trajectory necessitates a spreadout formation.

They are not well trained tactical formations but groupings of soldiers with one purpose in mind. Harrass the enemy before they reach the main line. Archers are the units you stick on walls, not slingers or skirmishers.

Slingers require a large area to deploy because their firing trajectory is very flat. It restricts the number of slingers you can usefully deploy and their effectiveness in battle.

It seems he's referring to gameplay balance, in reference to Point 1 (Slingers being too effective). I believe (although I'm not sure) that a height advantage can allow ranged units to ignore Shields sometimes, which would make the AP Slingers incredibly lethal on Walls.

They can be placed on walls at the beginning of the battle, and they really are dangerous.
I beat back their first attack with ease. Properly employed, E's can be very deadly, deadlier even than P's and Z's, though they're not as lethal as Paula Abdul or Right Said Fred.

I don't experience big problems with placing slingers on walls. In terms of historical realism, however, it would hardly be possible to place more than one rank of slingers on a wall, since they would shoot each other in the head.

I've never had any problems moving such units on walls either, are you trying to order multiple units to do so? I know that doesn't work, you need to do it one at a time.

I thought AP attacks only took half armour into account, not shields anyway?
It takes a big man to admit when he's wrong, I am not a big man.

AP attacks halve the Armor value, yes, but they're still affected by Shields (which are doubled against Missile Attacks).
