What's with the family members not in the family tree?

I'm playing IJ.
And Julian is the only one in the family tree.
But there are a lot of generals and family members all over your empire.
The generals, I understand. You can train them in BI.
But whats with the ones called 'family members', shouldn't they be in the family tree?.

My understanding is that those family members will take the place of the big man if he and his blood relatives kick the bucket too. Then, they would start their own family tree. But, well, as I said in another thread, I'm famous for being wrong.

They are generals.

If all of the people on your family tree die then its game over.
