    whats ele? melee?
anyways, i would have the musketeers focus on a crap unit, like some militia if you have it, will u have some cav, any cav, sneak up behind them or flank them and then the musketeers will be gone. they dont stand a chance in any kind of melee

Maybe light cav doing some encircling movement and attack them from behind/in the flank that might work.

well, you get alot of the best melee infantry you have and just charge. That should do it. But run fast before they cut you down.

Any cavalry will suffice. If you are really frightened of musketeers spread the cavalry out loose formation. As long as they have some decent morale from experience or a general, they will utterly trash the musketeers easier than they do longbowmen. I experimented with musketeers defending a charge by mailed knights and they never even get a shot off or kill one knight. Once melee begins they stand there and are executed one by one - it is nauseating to watch.

One of the most effective ways to deal with muskets, and yet the most dangerous. Is to charge with your Cavalry General. He's fearless so he won't pull up short when they're shooting at him.

But all in all, most the time.... I'll send peasant fodder out in front to take the intial fire from the muskets while my cavalry comes charging up.

if you dont want to go with the cavalry charge people here mention, or the foot archer option (preferably with bows, since musketeers have no armour to speak of) then you could always use 2 cheap units (i've done it with one, but sometimes they wouldnt destroy the musketeers) for each musketeer unit your opponent has (or just one of the super fast native american units)

keep your unit(s) in loose formation and once you see the musketeers to start loading/shooting, run your men and charge them

Once you reach gunpowder, make sure you train some artillery. they make quick work of musketeers.

Thanks for reading the thread, he stated that he does not want to use artillery or elephants.

Archers destroy gunpowder units as they're generally lightly armoured.

I played my first multiplayer game last night against another first timer. I decided to go as the turks (never played them much before) and included 2 units of janisary musketeers. My opponent was also unfamiliar with the turks and played as milan including a large complement of crosbows and archers and 2 grand bombards (i only had one cannon). Just after the set up phase my musketeers immediatly started firing. My opponent chose a rather standoffish approach trying to whittle me down with his superior artillary while flanking me with mounted crossbows.
A short time passed, and he exclaimed that to his surprise exactly half of his front lines where dead.
I was suprised how effective they were and i was used to bog standard musketeers, of course if he had rushed them it would have been a differnt battle.
