The church has mandated that thou shalt not do this, and thou shalt do that and to break those regulations is to put two fingers up to church authority, be it the see of rome, of canterbury, or a grand ayatollah or chief rabbi.

The church insists you worship in their way, and abide by their rules and practices, because they say you can only find god through the church. If all the masses found out this wasn't true, the power of the church would be destroyed.
