Re: Incompetent Commanders
Well first, Incompetent Commander and Renowned Victor are not mutually exclusive, it is possible to get both (as you've noticed) and the triggers for one don't necessarily mean you wont get the other.
Here are the possible ways to get BadCommander (the root trait for incompetent commander):
33% chance if you Withdraw before a battle with odds >= 0.5 and <= 1.75
85% chance if you Withdraw before a battle and you were the attacker
85% chance if you lose a siege battle with odds >= 1
33% chance if you lost a battle with odds >= 1
75% chance if you lost a battle, had at least 25% casualties and had odds >= 2
If you are not doing any of the above, then you may have another problem. However, if you constantly attack people to check the odds or something, then withdraw, this could be causing your problem.
Edit: I should note the information here is from SS 6.1 with RR 1.1 / RC 1.6 and SSTC

Re: Incompetent Commanders
Thanx for the tip, IceBeast. But none of those stats apply to me 'coz I'm not doing any of that. In fact my emperor recieved the "Incompetent Commander" trait after a heroic victory against the Fatimids. Enemy losses were huge and mine were minimal. So whats going on?
Thanx for the stats, though.
P.S I'm not using RC&RR and Byg's III.

Re: Incompetent Commanders
:hmmm:Here is a run down of the latest incident. Byzantine army advances into Egypt with full stack and 5 star general. In Egypt I run into a stack of Fatimids 5 units strong consisting of arab infantry and tabardariyya. Battle starts, my archers and mounted archers shoot them to pieces and those arabs that make it to my battle line get skewerd on the pikes of my guard pikemen. End result: all fatimids dead and seven pikemen also. After battle I get a report that my commander has just gotten the "Incompetent Commander" trait and now has only 3 stars. What the?! Has anyone else had this problem?

Re: Incompetent Commanders
Can you attach a copy of your export_descr_character_traits.txt. It may be that there is something wrong with your install.

Re: Incompetent Commanders
Hmm, your file should be working the exact same way mine is, which means something else is going on. Hmmm, I'm thoroughly stumped.
Perhaps quark will see this and can give you more insight. Most of the traits and ancillaries are his work.

Re: Incompetent Commanders
Yea, this is weird. I'm currently conducting a large campaign with the byzantines against Sicily and the Papal States. I've got seven field armies that are commanded by seven 5-8 star generals. Now most of them have only arround 2-4 stars and as the campaign continues and the battles mount up, they become more and more useless.

Re: Incompetent Commanders
I know this might seem a little insulting but you are using 6.1?
I'm pretty sure you are but just checking
On a side note, I've only seen 1 or 2 other posts on here about Unproven Commander and incompetent commander popping up a lot, and those were both before 6.1 was released, so you might have some weird update error from 6.0 to 6.1

Re: Incompetent Commanders
Yes, I am using SS 6.1.
In fact I'm new to SS 'coz I've always played Deus Lo Vult, but the latest instalment put me off with all that RPG crap. So I looked for other mods and found SS. Awsome mod and I've had no problems at all except this one.
P.S 6.1 is the only SS mod I've ever played.
