Black Screen Crash

So its like this...I've been a fan of the Total War Franchise ever since the first game in the series. I finally picked up a copy of Medieval II to go along with the my new graphics card, a nVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT...though after about 5 minutes into the game (Campaign or Tutorial), it crashes to a completely black screen, and I am able to do nothing.

I've looked around for answers, but found none matching my problem exactly. I'd appreciate any help you guys could give me...so thanks in advance.

-Dell XPS
-nVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT Graphics Card (512 MB Card)
-Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz
-319GHz, 512 MB of RAM

You should wait more than 8 hours before you bump, not that many people solving issues on the forum. What version do you have? Any patches installed? Any mods installed?

No mods, no patches as of yet.

No expansions, just the original Medieval II.

512meg ram with this game is about minimum on XP. If you're running Vista, my experience is a gig or more.
