Default Cant boot from DVD drive

So I have my new laptop and am trying to dual boot XP and Ubuntu. I've got the iso on a disc and have the boot order right and go to boot and the damn thing tells me
    Code:
media test failure. Check the cable.
    I have a HL-DT-ST DVDROM GSA-T40N drive and am booting from a standard CD-R.

Bootable CD's/DVD's can be tricky. When you burn the ISO to disc at what speed are you setting the software at? Personally I wouldn't use anything above x8 on a CD and that goes for burning iso's and audio cd's as well.

You seem to know what your doing so this might seem a patronising. When your burning the file you are burning the ISO to create a CD and not just burning the iso file to a disc?

Ah will check. It says Ultra Speed on the side which proberably isn't great.

Did it at 4x and the error still comes up
    Code:
    media test failure. Check cable.
    Any ideas?

Some people who are having the same problem as you have managed to get around the problem by using this free piece of software.

I have experiance running Linux, however I prefer to use a USB key (smaller, more data, less likely to break and doesn't get scratched etc). So if your still getting issues after using that programme and have a 1gb USB key (there dirt cheap these days) you might want to look at this.

Thanks I'll try that. I'm guessing the drive recons theres nothing in there.

On a tangent is there a way to get the biometric fingerprint reader to work. I have no idea how it works but I'm guessing I need to enable it and tell it my fingerprint.

EDIT: Thanks Freddie am now into Ubuntu.

I really need wireless drivers for an Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01) so I can get away from the etherenet cable and back online properly.
