Hmm, it would only say "invalid" if you typed in your CD-Key incorrectly. Are you sure you typed it in correctly?
And just to clarify what TubbZ said, be certain that you added the hyphens in between your sequence of letters/numbers.
If all else fails, you can either:
1) have someone else in your household type in the CD-Key for you
2) contact Sega, and go from there

Sega has been known to issue new cd keys when the old ones have proven to be invalid.

Does the CD Key you are using belong to the disk(s) that you are using?

Call SEGA up, they'll fix it.
I think any valid CD key works for the installer - your aren't trying to use a RTW cd key with the Gold install, though? That would have problems.
