Game freezes in city wall battles

Ive been running battles on max. settings with no problems and cities are perfectly fine UNTIL right about when seige towers unload on the walls and suddenly the game becomes unplayably sluggish and eventually freezes entirely.

I know this is a known problem which people have fixed on certain video cards but I am using Geforce 9800 and havent found a way to fix this problem.

If you've been tinkering around with the game files, you might have messed up some animations for siege ladder boarding. If you have a mod for walls/siege towers, remove it and try.

What game version are you playing? Most siege equipment problems were handled in version 1.2, but not all. Might have to auto-resolve to move on.
