I think that mercenary units can't be retrained.

Well I thought you could retrain them in a German Citadel, surely? I raised them initially in Switzerland I think.

I just recruit 2 merc units, and when they get low just combine them. Once that unit gets low again, disband... Their disproportionately high upkeep needs to eventually be mitigated amiright?

Yeah but you lose experience combining units. Trying to avoid that and just retrain them back up to full numbers.

Just retrain them in settlements in those regions above. They are called german knights but as you can see it is not in primary german area they are available but eastern europe.

Usually when i retrain units, there numbers dont raise. How do you do that? or are there special things you need to do?

Furious, they wont always retrain to full numbers. For that to happen the settlement they are in must be capable of recruiting that type of unit. If you are retraining but not getting more men, then what is likely happening is that you are upgrading either their armor or exp.

Yeah. If you drag one depleted unit (of the same type) onto another, they will combine. If together you end up with more than enough soldiers to fill a unit completely, then you will end up with 1 full unit and another with whatever is left over.

That's a bad idea though if you want to gain the most from it, or if you have units of the same type and some have armor upgrades and some don't? Or isn't it I haven't tried...

If you merge a unit without upgrade into a unit with, they'll lose their armor upgrade.
If you merge a unit with lower experience into a unit with higher exp, they sometimes lose some exp. The other war around though, a unit can sometimes gain exp. and then you retrain the unit with higher exp that you donated men from.

You can retrain to just to give units armor upgrades, then their numbers don't raise. The same goes if you put a unit with low exp in a settlement with like swordmasters guild, then you will retrain them for the added exp. and they'll only be given full numbers if you have the facility to actually recruit them. These things can happen at the same time of course. Retraining for armor and higher exp is sometimes expensive so merging units so their armor goes away can be expensive. It's better to train them with armor from the start.

But that might be more micro managing than you want to do
    Cheers

They don't "lose" experience. It just takes the average of it. Putting 10 experienced guys with 90 newbies keeps their experience but it displays as 0 - the experience is still there though and they will raise to 1 quicker than a 100 man newbie unit.

Well I finally got it sorted. I can retrain them in Frankfurt! I thought a Castle unit needed to be retrained in a Castle. DOH!

They aren't castle units, they are mercenaries!

They can be "retrained" in any settlement where the mercenaries are currently available for hire. When you retrain them, it takes the mercenaries out of the regions mercenary pool.
