I think the first version (if it's made...) will be primarily a faction mod, i.e adding a roman faction to the game so I don't think region/settlement research is needed. However, if you would like to help compile a unit list then you can certainly help. Check my other post for my current ideas...feel free to add your own.
Great, I'll send you a message now.

One thing you shouldn't do, is include a Roman faction in a humongous mod like Stainless Steel. That would completely dwarf the importance of the faction, you would lose all flavor of playing with these guys on a small and intimate scale, and in the end I think most people would be very dissatisfied. Instead, I recommend that you make a strong focus on Italy, southern France, and Sicily. Take a finished map from any of the mods working on medieval Italic campaign, and your map is basically 95% already there. Then take all of the medieval units, maybe skin them up or import good skin packs, and your unit selection is 95% finished. Really, the only new thing you'd need are new Roman models. But! Even there you've got Roman models which were already completed by someone else for MTW2:

So at the end of the day, before the mod's already started, it's already ~80-85% complete. All it needs is dedicated text-editing to put this whole thing together, add interesting scripted events, add a back-story and various nuggets of history, and you've got a mod on your hands.

bleh...units look crappy, and seeing its only 56 mb, im guessing the creator didnt add any new scripts and such.
he got it from RTW so it looks gay and the map models have no sigh
Oh no the picture of my dog disappeared!
What you guys really need to do is get your hands on those amazing Roman screenshots I linked in my earlier post. In other words you need to beg scratch and scream for that modeler to let you use them, since so far no mod has been allowed to incorporate 'em, and if yours doesn't deserve it, I don't know what does. Creating strat map models will be super-easy after that. Get a few screenshots of all these units in, and the idea will be awash in followers.
hmm.... will the Western Empire go back to a Republican-type system or follow the ways of Byzantium? With absolutist monarchs? Because that divide could be the major contrast that could make civil war more likely...also how would the Catholic Church work in the new Rome?
The Duke of Dunwich and surrounding fiefdom
For any who are interested by my FF on occurrences in Rhun and beyond; I have begun a new project (not because the old one is finished, just opening more room for ideas) about one of the minor characters, Rankal. It is in the Third Age AAR index and here is the link http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=376994
so whos gonna be the mod leader?!
Paine, I think, anyway, would the western empire be modelled on the republican era ( government style)?

Sorry for the lack of replies recently, I've been on holiday (no internet access).
Thanks for the advise and link to those skins SigniferOne, they look awesome. Did the guy who made them make them available for download? I've seen the screenshots in that thread but couldn't find a download link.
Zuma, the download doesn't seem to work but thanks anyway. The strat models look good there, but the unit models look a bit substandard.
Sirfiggen, right now the plan is to have the Western Empire with an Imperial style government (i.e an Emperor as the main faction leader).
Thanks for all the feedback everyone.

hey, awesome idea and well thought through... least you didn't just say its 1080, they're romans now go play.
The units look kinda substandard and anyway if the roman empire did re-emerge, i don't think it'd have gone back to exactly the same military, they would probably have kept the western cavalry as they are more powerful. You probably should modify the campaign map to have more regions, especially in the south of italy because if the empire is to rise you'll want more than one settlement... maybe start it during your religous wars in the far south to give the player an obvious first move
i'd be glad to help with any map work or concept and v n v's
