Gladiators?

Can someone explain to me which gladiator unit is most effective?

Mirmillo don't make much sense, you need a huge city and a coliseum to train them yet they have lower attack than samnites, seem to have the same weapon as velites but have no shield. Is it supposed to be this way? Is there something I'm missing that makes them good despite their lower stats and lack of shield?

Whichever has the highest stats, I suppose (I think thats the Samnites or Mirmillos). I wouldn't use them in the first place, a normal heavy infantry unit serves my purposes much better.

They are one of the last vanilla leftovers, I don't think they are widely used...
