Default Was labeled a coward while sailing to a Crusade!

I'm playing Total War: Medieval II (v1.2). Everything's working great. BUT! I successfully joined the first Crusade of my campaign. So far I'm the only one who's joined. I selected my King and plenty of units and successfully joined the crusade. I even got my confirmation for having completed the task. I'm England, my King and units were in England. I put everyone into a fleet of ships and sent them off to the destination. The very next turn I was labeled a coward for abandoning the crusade! What? Huh? I was on my way! Do I have to travel by land? You can't take a ship all the way?

Thanks for any help. I searched and searched for this answer, but there's just too many posts in this forum. I was getting threads about George Bush for cying out loud!

    1. cursader armies cannot be attack by other catholic nations, unless they are the one being crusaded against
    2. going around the iberian peninsula by boat moves you farther away from the crusade target in the holy land. this is when your army can disband on its own

As england crusades suck. They are never very close and it takes forever for you to get there. If you really want to go walk all the way through france and buy merc boat to sail to the holy land. But i would wait for someone to get excommunicated so it will be closer.

But if you want to be really close, be Venice. They are in the best starting position for crusades (when you can only chose from 5 factions, but they still are in a good place)

Nuh uh. Spain is the best once you get a port city.

As the Venetians you have to deal with the Byzies and bunch of pirates.

But the AI Byzies suck! And how is Spain better? They (and Portugal) are the 2 farthest away from the Holy Land! (you know, Jerusalem and those cities. Not America, that's where they are closest...)

Well... eh, I guess you're right, but if you get a port city then you have a straight shot to the Holy Land by way of boat.

If you're smart you can use that to your advantage, use the Crusade as an excuse to sail to Cyprus very quickly and conquer it, 'while we're in the neighborhood...' Or if by land, cut a bloody swath right through all their lands. It's all downhill to Jerusalem!

That's what I did in my Venice game, taking a page from the 4th crusade

Excellent replies all. Many thanks. I will try the "walk to the bottom of Italy" tactic.

Now that the Pope has recognized me joining the Crusade, am I still limited to what's remaining of the original "10 turns" or do I get a little longer to arrive in the desert? I'm guessing any particular crusade will last more than a handfull of turns? Giving a person time to arrive?

I know, I know, you're asking why I took so long to play this game. I got this game early in 2007. I took it out of the package, installed it, but my house sold and I had to move. At my new house (1,000 miles away) my hard drive had failed in transit - complete loss. My "Total War: Medieval II" disc was packed away in storage. I've been playing other newer games in the interim. (So many great games have been released!) But I am now getting another chance to play Medieval. I much prefer strategy over shooters.

Again, thanks for the superfast (and productive) comments.

To the OP: I'm an English addict, so here's what I do: Even faster than walking to the heel of Italy, is simply to walk to the southern coast of France and hire a couple merc boats - off ya go! Boats are faster than feet, so sailing quicker is better.

If someone hasn't yet posted this, the reason your troops abandoned you is because according to the map coordinates, when sailing around the Iberian Penninsula, you actually got further away from your target than the last turn. It's a , but ya gotta work with it.

Also note: France won't be too happy when you march a full stack through their lands (usually a 1-point rep drop), but no matter - you'll be smashing the cheese eating surrender monkeys soon, eh?

A little harsh, but I have to admit taking over France is too fun!

I love playing Spain, and ever time without fail, (even when I married off my little girl to them) they blockade my port a few turns after I compleated my Reconquista. I then proceed to straighten them out but good.

Before you go and play spain, do note that they suck in the beginning

I dont play several countries because their position is so useless. I never played Scotland because you will never be able to get to the Holy lands within 100 years.... And i did play as England. And i DID sail all the way to jerusalem without my army leaving the crusade..

and expand your scottish empire thru there as well as rebel oslo and stockholm like i did in my campaign

I managed a marriage alliance with england and we been perfect since like turn 10? but that was before i blitzed rebel cities wales and york before the brits came

go in the holy land afterwards

oh yeah and then i assasinated the pope and got my own scottish pope elected as well as 3 scottish cardinals in the college muhahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know, they suck, simple mailed knights and spearmen. I'm just going to take the two rebel cities in the penisuala, then drive the moors south, then take portugal out and establish a powerhouse in iberia. At the same time have a colony in the holy lands perhaps. Then establish trade and move unto northen africa at the same time taking the island west of italy. Moving north to france and taking some of the sea cities and improving trade. Maybe then taking more of the holy cities and some more important trade cities. Who knows what else, maybe take on the eastern empires? Not forgetting the americas. Then obviously once I've done that I can play americas campaign in kingdoms or find a mod

p.s. read my signature and show some support if you can

English Crusade is the best, you could hire the most number of mercenaries, sack the most number of cities, and devestate your regional enemy by sending none crusading army seige a huge city with a crusading army around it. You could have four generals go on crusade by four routes, to the south, you could sack through france, milan, sicily, moor, to egypt, to the east, through HRE, poland russia, to turky. Straight to Jerusalem, through vience, BE, and Egypt. Through sailing, all the ports, sack and run. You could amass money that could last for twenty turns after crusade.

Well, if you look for coward, you need to know which categories to look into...

I've always wanted to know where those crusaders go when they abandon your crusade at sea. Do they decide it's better to enjoy a watery grave than skip out on your crusade?!

perhaps, or perhaps they magically mutate to mermaids and swim away.
