Shock troops?
I quite don't get this part. I been playing with barbarian factions and they say that their tactic is base on shock. Usualy their infantry have bigger charge value. But in the battle a unit with charge 1 or 15 seem to do exactly the same damage when they colide with enemy formation. So what is the difference? Or how does this shock thing truely work?

Re: Shock troops?
Actually getting a charge bonus for infantry is a very difficult task...

Re: Shock troops?
How can you get an effective charge with your units? With cavalry I know but with infantry nothing seems to really make a difference?
My infantry when charges, they start shouting when they get near the enemy they seem to stop running, do this wussy colision and doesnt make a single kill or break a formation.

Re: Shock troops?
Yeah. Charge bonus for infantry is a decoration for most of the time.

Re: Shock troops?
I find this part quite unrealistic and this gives more advantage to the civilized armies. I can imagine that back then a huge group of guys charging reckless would create an huge impact and damage. They don't even have power to break a line, not even near. Is there away to fix this?
My suggestion is to make the shock far more massive and reduce their fighting skills to balance it.

Re: Shock troops?
playing another mod (don't remember which) when hoplites charged light infantry like sparabara (charge bonus 9 for the hoplites), at least 20 or 30 sparabara died immediately

What would be more unrealistic is charging a wall of shields, spears and swords and hope to make a kill with that charge. If anything, you should be the one that get a stab in the stomach after your go off-balance from colliding with a shield.

Re: Shock troops?
I think I've been somewhat successful when hitting the opposing battle line with denser ranks near the flank of an enemy unit, it breaks up their cohesion a bit and forces them to change position. I follow this up with another charge, not necessarily of a unit of shock troops, either to the right or left of the initial point of contact. I may not get much in terms of instant kills but it does disrupt the enemy line.

Re: Shock troops?
I don't know why but I think classical hoplites can really shake enemies when they charge.
For example when you hit a phalanx from their side... Maybe it is dense formation that helps to push?
Maybe since Celts have very lousy formations in general, their charges are weaker?
