    Default Watchtowers

Is anyone else obsessive about building watchtowers so you can see every inch of your terrority? I've even assigned a useless family member the task of following my main armies into enemy lands and building watchtowers as I take the terrortories! Probably just a bit of OCD, I can't stand not seeing what's in my lands.

It's a good idea - you can nip rebel armies in the bud before they get too big and stop them damaging your lands.

I'd recommend sending a spy in first though. I sent one of my family members on a watchtower mission once and he got caught in a rebel ambush...he escaped but I lost a few hairs from the experience.

In the past I've usually just made a network of spies. That way, it's like having watch towers that you can move around and do missions with. However, I have recently started building more watch towers.

If you're tight on money, towers are a better choice, since they have no upkeep (at least that I'm aware of). They also don't die of old age.

    Jamey has the right idea

I use spies too in enemy lands just over my border, knowledge is everything! Very important to know what's going on.

I'm always obsessive about building watchtowers. I'm also obsessive about keeping at least one spy in every settlement (with high quality ones near the borders) to spot enemy spies and assassins.

I always use my worst family members for this job. I had one whose hilights were hooting and crippled; I needed to do something with him. If these family members get killed in an ambush, I consider it a blessing. Hopefully it happens before they breed...

Although I think they can be "captured" if an rebel army stands next to them to long, but I can't remember for sure.

I'd check, but I play Sarmatians, so any rebel army has maximum 2 turns before Horse Archers are breathing down their necks.

Yeh any single unit or a whole army stood on the same tile as a watchtower will take over it and gain the bonuses to the distance they can see! Potentially dangerous if the watchtower is overlooking an enemy and a rebel unit of Peltasts comes and sits on it.

Can be very useful on borders, but mostly I let the AI build them for me
