Default A.I assassins are a bit much aren't they?

    Only playing on normal difficulty.

14 members of the 16 in my family tree have been Assassinated.

I keep having to have adoptions.

I'm trying to keep up with the assassins but they are everywhere.

The last straw being when my Faction leader got assassinated by a level 3 assassin. After the round I lost a level 6 and a level 7 assassin to two easy targets.

Seriously, if I tried that, with the personal entourage and bonuses he had, I'd have had about a 3% chance of success.

    Does anyone have any tips?

I'm trying to use spies to find them, but its a bit tricky sometimes.

I wish they attacked me like that, but they don't. Might be because I have too many spies all around and counter-assassins....

I currently have around 13 cities, and 3 Generals between them, Including my faction leader, I had an assassin and a spy in the city with him hoping they'd help keep him safe, I saw an opportunity to take the neighboring city and I logically took my leader as he had 6 command and 10 dread. Not to mention no other general for miles. But as soon as he left the city walls he got assassinated.

So, 2 generals between 13 cities now, called off the attack, don't think I'll win it without him.

The only reason the other generals have survived is because they'd mostly been on an island until now.

Apparently keeping a spy or assassin around with your general just doesn't cut it anymore. The best I can hope for in cases like that is the assassin taking a swipe at my general and missing, but they almost never get killed even if I see them clear as day. Usually I'm forced to send my own assassins to off the enemy assassins, seems like that's how CA wanted it.

Also, what campaign difficulty are you playing?

Wow, I think I only had to deal with 1 enemy assassination attempt and it failed (maybe I should try normal difficulty...)
Jon had taken Donal and Benjen’s advice to heart: Sam may be fat and pathetic, but he is still a member of the watch, and one of the few black brothers who isn't a rapist or thief. (out of context, this sounds ridiculously racist)

Just start training assassins and spies. In my current campaign as the turks, I have around 15-20 assassins and 10-15 spies. My spies usually locate the enemy assassins/spies, which I kill every time I locate one. So all my family members/generals are quite safe.

I changed the prices for assassins to 5k florins with a 1k upkeep, they start as level 3 assassins but the AI does not spam them as they are very costly.

You think M2TW assassins are bad you should have seen the Geisha in Shogun Total War - you could be the most powerful clan on the map with 50 provinces and in a few turns she would inexorably move from castle to castle exterminating all of your generals - and worst all with no fog of war you had to watch her coming knowing that nothing short of another Geisha could kill her.

I remember having to launch desperate offensives to destroy her faction before she finally killed the last one.

In M2TW If your faction is on the edge of extinction by assassins you really need to attach at least one spy and two or three assassins to every general and actively watch out for assassins and kill them as soon as they come into range (the extra assassins are failsafes in case the first fails).

If the assassins are from a neutral or even allied country attack them immediately as they might then use the recruitment slots to produce troops instead.

Generals who've fought many battles also seem less vulnerable than those that have spent their whole career in towns - however in the later game even the toughest general can be killed easily by artillery so the risks escalate there too.

Unless your leader has low authority in your position 'd be inclined to sail all my surviving family members to the island until some heirs have come of age (in RTW you could have put them on boats and sat in a harbour but in M2TW a sailor's life gives them bad traits - including the obvious ones ones that reduce their ability to procreate) - then keep the heirs on the island until they've married and procreated and only send out the old and childless ones.

You also need to consider moving your capital as any heirs whose fathers are dead will spawn there - and capitals seem to attract enemy assassins like flies.

If the leader has very low authority you are basically screwed as captain-led armies who end the turn outside of a settlement can just desert (nothing worse than building up a full stack of blue and gold chevroned troops with every available upgrade and have them go rebel)

You can also try and identify where the assassins are being recruited from and go after that city with everything you've got - normally I try to take out enemy castles first to eliminate their quality troop-producing centres but if their assassins are the bigger threat to your faction's survival you have to react accordingly.

And remember that if your own spies are good enough they can team with assassins to sabotage the buildings that produce enemy spies and assassins - as the AI often doesn't bother to repair this can be the cheapest way to solve the problem.

I very rarely, if ever, have 1 of my generals or others killed, even in a long campaign. I never seem to have a building sabotaged. I think I may have had it happen once about a year ago.

If an AI assassin attacks a captain and is successful is there any way of knowing?

I remember that geisha. I lost 3 of my best ninjas to her, and finally trained another geisha to get rid off her. And in another campaign, my faction leader was hunted by 3 geishas from two different factions!!!!

I never really have a problem with enemy assassins, I've only had a few family members and generals fall under an assassins dagger over the last year or so.

the AI builds assassins? ^^ maybe I build too many spies/assassins of my own for them to be effective.

You don't build spies or assassins?!?

M2TW Inquisitors used to be nearly as bad as the Shogun Geisha - however I think one of the patches at least made them quite easily killable by assassins.

So a Shogun geisha was like a serial killer, except instead of using knives, she used AIDS?

Geishas used everything from knives hidden in their fans to guitar strings to kill their victims
