    Default The Pope Neutralized

Playing in a campaign with Milian, I was excoumicated early in the game and decided to take Rome. The Papal States only held Rome at the time. So the sitting pope was elmaiated. The rest of the game, the Ponftiff just wandered around the boot with no home and no army.

I figured that another faction would offer the Papal States a new home. Nobody has though.

Does this happen often if you take out Rome and the Pope early?

No, the AI is just retarded (Its true, look at their general's traits)

Unless the Pope has another town somewhere then he'll keep coming after Rome (mostly using crusades and such). If a crusading army manages to take Rome, they'll give it to the Pope. But otherwise, none of the AI players are that much of a suckup to give away free territories

None of the AI give anything away besides trade rights...

Weird that no AI gives the pope a home, but I've never taken Rome before... The manual says that the pope will pretty much instantly be given another city by the AI when Rome is taken.

i believe that has happened in vanilla. italy was conquered and the pope was given land in Zaragosa, Spain

I've never understood how the pope works when you've taken Rome. I find it so much easier to just bribe them or play as a muslim faction.

im playing retrofit mod with grand unit addon... i think sicily took rome, and i havent come across any papal state city anywhere but i saw a long papal general wandering around the boot all by his lonesome... stranger still i was never notified of a war between the papal states and anyone...

there's a much simpler way to "neutralize" the pope (and sometimes his overblown ambitions - conquering 1/2 of europe)... gift him with an island settlement and then take rome... problem solved

Why do you people want to give the Pope trouble? Next to the Mongols and Timurids, he's the best thing in the game. He makes a great ally, he's the only one who won't betray you, he helps you by calling crusades and excommunicating factions so you can expand and get his favor, experience, and money, and he wears really superior clothing. (Even if you play as HRE, the Pope stays friendly with you up until the very second you betray him and take Rome.) By turn 100 you can easily have every member of the College of Cardinals be a member of your faction.

ha by turn 100 i only have 2 priests in 50 territory empire (i like to play slowly)
and i just built them to get rid of a heretic or witch one of my hundreds of assasins cant reach

but the pope loves money (greedy little bastard) and he will never betray unless you get excommnicated

I find that sucking up to the Pope makes for a boring game. The AI is pretty incompetent as it is, why turn the tables even more against it by having the Pope on your side? I usually try to be as insubordinate with the Pope as possible, so I usually end up excommed and slug it out with the other Catholics.

having a kinda weird papal issue in my byzantium game, h/h:

sometime early in the game someone, i did not notice who, wiped out the papal states but i don't think the pope was killed i battle, he just wandered around the boot, and he made peace with whoever took rome without getting a settlement. now to make the game more interesting, i decided to gift Rhodes to the Pope. it would stay papal for a decent amount of time, but then revolt on its own and come back to me, thus putting the Pope back out on the street, and me at war with him by default. granted thats not a big deal, i could wipe him out in one battle, but i dont want to. so i would quickly make peace giving him rhodes again. this kept happening though.

now i wiped out Venice, but the city of Venice itself would not accept me, so, before it overthrew me, I removed my units and demolished some building for cash, and then gifted it to the pope so he would have rhodes and venice.

well, after doing that, rhode revolted AGAIN and now the pope wont accept any ort of peace. contemplating wiping him out buuut... i want to cease actions in europe and finish up wiping out the Turks (I negelected them while expandin west). I don't wan to have to deal with most of catholic europe coming after me. venice was enough of a pain and drain. what to do?

when i played the byzantines i sent an army or priests to convert rome just to piss off the pope. rome converted to 70% orthodox in only a couple turns which forced the pope to go on the offensive. by the time i started my invasion of italy the pope didnt have many allies left. when i attacked them the only faction that got mad at me was france. france

En Tenebris Lux this might something that could solve your problem. but i dont know what your situation is so idk

well i abandoned the game because a mongel army somehow is islamic and got tagged as a jihad and attacked my capitol alongside a johading army of the egyptiants, i overextended and could not take constantinople (or should i call it istanbul now? lol) back so... so much for that.

pope became least of my worries.

off topic but how the hell do the mongels get labeled islamic and go on a jihad?! they sacked baghdad in real life and trampled the caliph to death, i mean, really!

But what happens if you kill the Pope and take all his provinces, and then you keep killing the cardinals that become popes (by killing the pope when he appears again and again) until there are no cardinals left to make a Pope? Will the Papal faction then be destroyed? Or what happens if there are no cardinals left in any faction to keep making a Pope then?

that would be pretty hard to do...
