    Default problem with laptop installation

It's my birthday on Saturday (wooo!) and I have been bought a shiny new laptop that urinates in the face of my current computer in terms of performance and hardware...but unfortunately when I attempt to install Rome onto it I get this annoying message:

"This installation package cannot be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package.
    E:/ Rome - Total war(TM).msi"

If anybody could shed any light on this problem I would very grateful :original:

Happy birthday for Saturday - haven't you spoilt the surprise by getting your present early?

What is your 'E' drive? Is it a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM?
What version of the R:TW game are you trying to install?
    What is your operating system?

If you supply this type of relevant information someone may be able to help you.

Hello Brusilov, thank you for the reply.

I believe the laptop has a DVD-ROM drive thingy and the version I am trying to install is unpatched vanilla 1.0 (I think, bought it back in the day)

    My laptop is running Vista.

But I managed to install Medieval fine, so it's very puzzling.

I can't check my discs for what is on them - I also have the original 1.0 3 CD-ROM set.

Is the drive a DVD-ROM R/W? That is can you burn DVDs on your laptop? My desktop at home has a DVD-ROM reader and a DVD-ROM R/W and there are times that I cannot install games with the disc in the DVD-ROM R/W drive. It tells me all nasty things like 'insert original disc and not a copy.

Someone else may be able to help you.

Well you might try getting the Gold version, because they are Made Specifically for the DVD drive, and it could be that your Rome disc is too old to play in a newer version of a Dvd rom drive, if you did indeed buy it back in the day. I also had this problem when i bought my new computer, i had to buy a new copy.

How new is new? I have a dvd r/w that's a year old and it still installs and reads RTW RTW/BI and right now it has SimCity3000unlimited in it of which is older than both of them.

Very expensive and brand new and, stuff.

But it might not be that, I personally think it's some random thing to do with .msi registries, but we shall see.

Yeah you're probably right I reckon, I can pick up a 2nd hand copy of gold edition at a local game shop for under a tennor so I shall embalk on that tomorrow. I'll be proper miffed if it does/says the same thing though lol...and also what gets me here is that yeah, possibly the RTW disc is too 'old' for the new laptop but Medieval 1 installed fine, which in a way contradicts the whole theory :/

But thanks for your help anyway, if I still encounter problems I post again and see if anybody has anymore words of wisdom.

My new PC (bought March 2007) had no problems whatsoever loaing up the RTW game from the 3 CD-ROM version.

The disc 1 was left in the drive in the old desktop and there's no problem with the disc. There are no scratches or marks on it.

Agh they didn't have a copy!!!

So I thought sod it i'll buy med2 but they didn't have that either! BALLS.

But I can't seem to find a way to resolve this at all, googling the error message gives some results and I've tried the methods given on other forums but to no avail.

The God's are punishing me aren't they?

Any Hellenistic priests in these forums? What would be the appropiate offerings in this situation? I would say the neighbours cat but, well, let's just say it didn't go down to well last time.

    Boo!

Did you check ebay? Amazom? Newegg? Bet you could buy it online if you look around.
