Default Strangest faction locations in campaign?

I'm playing as the HRE. Its the year 1158 and I'm playing on 1 year per turn.

    Notables
-I traded my provinces for the Byzantines
-I control strange parts of Turkish lands through peace treaties
    -Yes, Spain controls Caernarvon
    -Yes, Portugal controls Dublin
-Yes, Poland controls Milan (the city)
-The Papal States only have the two islands west of Rome (not sure if this is rare, but I've never seen them go on the offensive)
    -Poland control Novgorod

That about sums it up for this game! Very interesting play.

I would post a picture, but I'm not sure how to. I tried attaching a photo but it didn't appear...

Edit: Oh wait there it is...

On Stainless Steel, the Iberian factions always go up to the British Isles.

i have an interesting story about the papal states. usually they dont go on the offensive but when i played as the byzantines i decided (just for fun) to send an army of priests to rome. they converted that reigon to about 70% orthodox and immediately the pope started attacking milan. the pope never returned to rome for the rest of the game. by the time i started my invasion of italy the papal states had no allies left.

and just for the record the papal states has some formidable soldiers

Sometimes the pope helps an ally. As Sicily, they would block passage through Naples/Palermo straits when Venice tried to move through. Florence was seized. Corsica was seized. Valencia was also seized. This protected my north while I fought the Moors and kept the other Italians from meddling.

I never see the pope on a real offensive against a faction city. Usually excommunicate and sit back. Rarely on a crusade (never completes).

When I gift a provence, papal units appear by magic (mercenary recruits?) out of the turn sequence. I wish I could do that!

    Hi,

I think that there is already thread about this, but since you asked, here it is:
In my SS 6.1 imperial campaign, Portugese came and settled in Walles from where they raided me as England and Scotland. Even laid sieges to London twice.
Fatimids landed in Northern Italy with four full stacks and took Milan.
Genoese conquered Timbuktu deep in the heart of Sahara.
Whats next: Russians in Madrid and Papal states in Kwarezm

Playing as Spain in 1.3 have seen the pope conquer the whole of North Africa including Timbuktu.

As the Byzantines I had to defend Corinth every few turns against a new Papal army that would turn up, be completely destroyed and then replaced - I think I killed ten successive Popes in that campaign before I got bored, took Rome, sacked it, demolished everything and let it revolt back - after that the Pope couldn't produce any ships and was no longer a threat.

I come from a long line of Irish catholics but there is still something particularly satisfying about watching that Papal figure collapse and disappear on the strategic map.

And as England or Scotland I always have the Spanish or Portuguese park a stack outside Caernarvon - their ships sail off and just leave it there until you attack it.

Never understood why - unless you change it Caernarvon is always a castle and doesn't have any particularly impressive resources (sheep and coal IIRC) and I always garrison it properly - so Dublin should be much more attractive - maybe they just enjoy the rain and the scenery.

Other oddities seem to result mainly from Crusades - I've seen Poland take Toulouse, Hungary take Cairo etc.

But AI factions never seem to have the same problems holding on to a settlement with the wrong religion half the map away from their capital as I do - you see very few rebellions against AI factions even though they rarely seems to build happiness buildings,

I'm playing SS 6.1 at the moment 6 months per turn as HRE. The Papal States just took Florence just before I got my army there to take it myself They did this when I wasplaying as Genoa too.

it was some months ago that i found a couple of threads regarding the papal states and their "thirst for conquest"

to sum up what they said:

1st thread: the pope had conquered all of italy and was invading france, for some weird reason he was on a killing spree and with his superhuman italian militias and papal guard nothing stood in his way

2nd thread: one guy took jerusalem and decided to donate it to the pope (show of good faith), the result? the pope dominated all of the east (asia minor - turkish starting positions and egypt)

the above threads came with pics.... sooooo fear the pope i guess

edit: ok so i did a little looking up and tara!!!!!!! ---> pope owning the east

In my present Scots campaign the Poles have Yerevan and most of all Russia except the frozen north. The Byzantines have Caligari (or is that Calimari?).

I've had some pretty interesting play when it comes to the Papal States.

I actually got excommunicated in this game and really struggled to hold some of my cities from Papal invasion. I'm Portugal.

I've seen the pope be a complete edited for content to everyone around him on a few occasions.

In one game, the pope excommunicated Sicily, called and joined a crusade against Naples and then siege Naples. After he had taken Naples, he walked up to Milan and excommunicated their sorry asses too, but luckily they were spared the rigours of a crusade.

I was playing as Lithuania (Kingdoms Grand Campaign mod) at the time, so I found it a riot...I should have done the swamp-rome-with-priests thing, like an above poster.

I love paganising the monothestic factions.

I conquered the both europe and asia, and i just got too bored and decided to give all the cities to the Pope and move my entire Kindom of England to America. Where my people finally live in peace and prosperity. (At the expense of the natives, but who cares about those primitive savages! )
