Default Why do people always have to "rally" behind something?

Honestly I don't get it. I am not saying lets not care about politics , and not debate , I am saying lets not press our beliefs on others. I have a great idea too! If you don't believe in abortion, rather then making it so NOBODY can get an abortion, how about instead YOU not get an abortion. Am I the only one who is greatly annoyed by this...?

I understand what you mean, but I think abortion might be a bad example. I support free choice, but if you see something that you feel is murder you certainly are going to want it stopped, right?

I agree though, live and let live would be a good philosophy. I think people just fear things that are different and things they don't understand, and so to "protect" themselves they join with like-minded people to stop the thing they feel threatens their way of life. I'm just guessing here, but that's what it seems like to me.

If you don't like stealing, how's about instead of saying no one can steal, you just not steal.

The problem is laws exist to protect the society. If an act is felt to damage that society - say, theft or murder - laws will be passed against it. Therefore, when something is believed by a number of people to damage the society, they will rally round the idea and try to make it illegal, so it can't damage the society.

true, and that's why we have democracy, and laws made to protect the society which change as time does

well democracy, my most hated word I guess, unexplainable, easy to abuse.
Laws are indeed made to protect society in general, but as you are surely aware, problems lie completely someplace else.

Because laws do not say - you cannot do this n that (like murder) - this conclusion is wrong. I bet I can do that.
Its more of the - you do this and you will be punished for it, since its threatening the well-being of society in general.
YEt many laws out there and still people commit crimes

People in general are weak, and need the guidance of something(be that a rule, a regulation, another person or an idea) to get them through life without feeling alone and helpless. Very few can bypass this inherent weakness that most have.

I doubt most of them even know what they fear and also have as guide. But generally, people an complain alot, but do little.

Its a matter of incentives, without a punishment there would be certainly more crime, morality also acts like a disincentive for acting badly, laws are necessary for the efficient function of a society, but they are not allpowerful abstracts that prevent the "bad" things for happening, they are ways to regulate and minimize society´s danger.
