I followed the tutorial to the letter and get only the following error:-

    15:50:30.093 [script.err] [error] Script Error in latemod/data/descr_projectile.txt, at line 1453, column 1
    Expected 'display'
15:50:30.408 [system.rpt] [error] Medieval 2: Total War encountered an unspecified error and will now exit.

what it finds instead of display is grapeshot...

The idea was to let the shoot upwards to the walls, from inside the settlement, from street level. So they can burn invaders who are taking the walls with ladders or towers. It could be nice to let them shoot down from the walls too but I think the range isn't sufficient and changing that too might make them too strong perhaps.

I tried that with changing the max angle in descr_projectiles, from the default value to 45,75, and so on, but I havent tried 180° (just read about that in a different thread, maybe it works with 180°).

Well I've finally managed to get greek firethrowers working, I had to add several other files as well as those mentioned by J@mes.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    battlefield/fire/greek_burning_smoke.texture
    battelfield/fire/smoke6_greek.texture

    unit_sprites/byzantium_alamanoi_sprite.spr
    unit_sprites/byzantium_greek_firethrower_sprite.spr
    unit_sprites/byzantium_greek_firethrower_sprite_000.texture
    unit_sprites/byzantium_greek_firethrower_sprite_001.texture
    unit_sprites/byzantium_greek_firethrower_ug1_sprite.spr
    unit_sprites/byzantium_greek_firethrower_ug1_sprite_000.texture
    unit_sprites/byzantium_greek_firethrower_ug1_sprite_001.texture

    unit_models/_units (entire folder)
    unit_models/attachmentsets (entire folder)
    unit_models/weapons_library/flamethrower/flamethrower_01_active.mesh

    ui/units/byzantium/#greek_firethrower.tga
    ui/units/slave/#greek_firethrower.tga
    ui/units/mercs/#greek_firethrower.tga
    ui/units/merc/#greek_firethrower.tga

    ui/unit_info/byzantium/greek_firethrower_info.tga
    ui/unit_info/slave/greek_firethrower_info.tga
    ui/unit_info/mercs/greek_firethrower_info.tga
    ui/unit_info/merc/greek_firethrower_info.tga

And to keep things looking nice in text/export_units I added the following after Greek_Bodyguard.

    {Greek_Firethrower}Greek Firethrower
{Greek_Firethrower_descr}Greek Fire is one of the most terrifying weapons available in the Medieval World. The Byzantines first used it in naval battles, but soon found applications for its use on land. Consisting of a small hand pump connected to a container, it is capable of burning even underwater and sticks to its target, while being almost impossible to put out.
{Greek_Firethrower_descr_short}A devastating and terrifying weapon shooting spurts of liquid fire. Consisting of a small hand pump connected to a container.

I used the barebones folder and without the files outlined above, my mod CTD when loading a battle involving Greek Firethrowers.
Hope this info helps anyone else who has the same problems as I did.

I'm using gold edition, and.... oh god, this is probably necromancy. Anyways- I'm using gold edition, and I followed the original tutorial, and nothing has happened. The unit has not been added to the Byzantine custom battles, or the Byzantine campaign. I've had no issues withblack screen and error messages, but I think I screwed up the Export_Desc_Buildings file. Or maybe the Export_Desc_Units filel, but I think not.

    Please help?

I've added the Greek Firethrower to PDER, but I'm having trouble activating the sounds of the flamethrower...

If I'm rebuilding my sound files (as I already have custom music, voices, and warhorns), what text files do I need to update for the firethrower?

Could you please provide more information on this? I can't understand some parts of this tutorial. I have tried adding flamethrower unit to LTC mod, but I got error CTD.

Depending on how you have set your mod folder up will depend on where you need to copy these files if your using barebones (like myself) copy to the main directory after making back ups of the files listed below
    What is this "barebones"??

open your unpacked crusader campaign folder and copy these file to your main directory
    (once you have made back-ups)

    found: Data Folder
    descr_effect_impacts.txt
    ....
    ....
    .....
What do you mean by main directory? M2 directory or LTC mod directory?

copy (over writing) these into your main Medieval II Total War data/sound directory

    flamethrower_firing.evt
    flamethrower_remains.evt
    flamethrower_start.evt
You mean I have to copy those files to M2 directory and not to the LTC mod directory? If so, then why? Because I want to add the unit to the mod and not to the vanilla M2.

so now we need an entry for the EDU (export_descr_unit.txt)
copy the following into your EDU
Again, the mod, or the M2 vanilla EDU?

Maybe I sound like a noob (which is actually quite true), but I really hope somebody reads this and answers me.

Having a little problem here , everything is working fine except when I fire , the sound coming from them is like firing archers or crossbows.

Hey guys i have fixed the missing sounds issue in the Greek firethrower units. Check out my tutorial here.
Finally all modders can add this unit with fully functional sounds.
