Default [Crusades AAR] Richard the Lionheart

    Interlude

The times of darkness have came… The end of the world is approaching. Days are becoming darker, storms more violent, winters cold as never before. People are losing their faith… Europe is divided and ravaged by endless wars. Every king and nobleman are fighting for glory, for treasures, even for the smallest peace of land. They forgot the service to God. Everyone forgot it: from peasants in the fields to the high kings. This is the reason why the times of darkness have came. It’s time to pay for our sins…

God sent a message to us – he punished Christians for the loss of their faith. The pagans of the East, led by a devil servant, Saladin, have taken Jerusalem and are eager to conquer all of Holy Land. The last fortresses of Christianity are being hammered by evil pagan hordes and will not hold for long. Pope issued a new bull calling all Christians to arms. Three kings have answered the call, but it will be the only one who will be able to retake the Sacred Grave.

There is hope – it lies in the East…

Hello! I got the idea for this AAR not long ago, while enjoying the sun on the beach. This is my first attempt at writing an AAR so all comments are welcomed. I'm also sorry for my English - there should be some mistakes. Please ignore them or PM me and I will correct them. Hope you will have a good read!

Looks good so far (and your English is very good). Which mod are you using, is it a M2TW one or a RTW one?

This mod is for BI. It's not a very well known mod, but it's very enjoyable and hard. It is "Crusades" by Caius Britanicus. And here is the update:

    Book I – Cyprus

    Chapter I – The storm

At the 1187 year of Christ our beloved new pope Gregory VII called all Christians to take up their weapons and retake the Holy Land from Saracens. Our king Henry II answered the call, but soon died. He was succeeded by his brave and noble son – Richard. He was a man of unmatched tactical knowledge, chivalry and faith. He was the one who was believed to retake the grave of Christ…

Richard gathered a large army of 1800 knights, 4500 English men-at-arms and 1800 formidable Welsh longbowmen. The additional Templar forces were to join him later in Sicily. In 1188 Richard and his army left England and met with king Philip of France at Marseille. The two armies set sail to Sicily soon after. Sicily should have been only a small stop only to join with the forces of Templars, but the new ruler of Sicily, Tancred, have placed Richard's sister in prison. It was a personal insult to Richard, who soon besieged Tancred’s fortress Messina. Philip was bored to wait and set sail with his army of 15000 troops directly to Holy Land. After two moths of siege Richard captured Messina and freed his sister. Tancred was beheaded for his crimes. From this point on Richard got his cognomen of the Lionheart. Richard had many chances to prove the validity of his new name, and he did it. Not only by his chivalry and brave heart, but also by the way he dealt with his enemies.

Two months later Richard with the total force of 16000 men and 100 ships left for Holy Land. Near the coasts of Cyprus he was struck by a violent storm which sank few ships and several more were ran aground, including the one with Richard’s sister and the one with most of his treasury. When Richard with the remaining ships got to the coast he was amazed to find that Joan, his sister, and the treasury were missing. He was soon informed by the locals that it is the job of Isaac of Cyprus, the Byzantine ruler of the island. The only response to such deed could be war. By these events the beginning of Richard’s Crusade is marked.

Does it have a campaign map? or is it just custom battles? (this actually might seem a stupid question seeing as how you are writing an AAR for it )

edit: And yes, the units are awesome. Rome Medieval uses a good deal of them. (If I had it my way we'd use all of them )

Yea, there is some mistakes left. Also some cool features were not included in the campaign, but considering that there were only a few people working on it, it's a realy great mod.

Of course there is a map . The map pictures only the Near East, but its scale is huge.

    Book I – Cyprus

    Chapter II – Colossi

Richard landed his army on the coast at the very beginning of 1189. He sent his heralds to Isaac asking him to release his sister, return the treasury and reimburse the insult he did. Isaac’s response was: “Come and take them, you are not welcomed here and if you are going to stay in my island I promise that it is going to be your new grave”. Richard was filled with rage when he heard these news. He wasn’t an enemy of Byzantine emperor, but such insult could not stop him from declaring war to Byzantines of Cyprus. Richard knew that Emperor is busy with Turks and cannot help his vicegerent in Cyprus. Thus the war with Isaac began.

Richard immediately besieged Colossi with hope that Isaac will come with his army to free the town. He was wrong to hope that Isaac will be brave enough to confront him on the battlefield. While Isaac was covering behind the walls of Nicosia, Richard kept Colossi besieged and ordered his navy to block the port of Limasol, one of wealthiest ports on the island. At the same time he sent spies to collect information about enemy positions and their strength. Richard knew that his enemy should be superior in numbers, but this was usual to him. When he was putting down rebellions of Frankish noblemen in Normandy he learn that not the numbers are most important, but the person who leads his men to battle.

Three weeks later Richard’s spies brought the news about the enemy. The defenders of Colossi had nearly 14500 troops, but they were leaderless, demoralized by siege, thirst and hunger. Limasol had a garrison of 11000 troops, while Famagusta was very lightly defended with just a thousand of men. However the main force of Isaac was huge to say the least. Spies were unable to count its exact strength, but the approximate numbers were more than 35000 troops. The numbers were overwhelming, but Richard showed no sign of fear, even seemed pleased to hear such news. It was a challenge, one more challenge in his life, and he was ready to take it. Spies also brought good news about English navy victory against Byzantines near Limasol. It was great news indeed, as navy was Richard’s key to prevent any help coming for Isaac.

At the end of January the defenders of Colossi decided to sally. They were desperate, as the granaries were empty and Richard’s army blocked all ways of escape. The leadership of them was taken by Jacques, wealthy Byzantine owning large estates next to the town. His force consisted of 3000 cavalry, nearly 8000 infantry, and 3500 archers from Trebizond. The force was nearly the same strength as Richard’s army, but the difference in leadership and troop morale was huge.

Jacques decided to simply begin the infantry fight while he and his cataphracts were to flank the Richard’s force. Richard deployed his infantry in the centre, sent his longbowmen and crossbowmen to the left, while the English knights were deployed on the right.

When Jacques troops marched out of the town they were met by a storm of arrows. The deadly arrows killed many defenders. Jacque forced his men to engage Richard’s infantry immediately. The infantry fight began with the countercharge of English men-at-arms and Templars. Archers of both sides started the arrow exchange while Jacque’s cataphracts were getting closer to Richard’s right. Byzantines had numerical cavalry superiority, but English were much better equipped. Richard ordered his knights to charge and the bitter fight began. Byzantine infantry were trying to hold, but it was not up to their strength. Richard used this moment to charge them and Byzantines broke their ranks and started to flee. At the same time English knights killed Jacques and his cavalrymen. The massive rout ensued, where many of Byzantines were killed while others captured.

This was a great victory. 11500 Byzantines were killed and 3000 more were taken prisoners. English lost only 2200 men. Richard ordered to bring all the captives and locals to the field next to the town. When orders were accomplished he gave a speech to the crowd: “The people of Colossi and the soldiers who were unlucky and chose a shameful surrender instead of death, I’m the new master of this town and I have to express my dissatisfaction of your actions. Isaac, your lord, captured my sister and took my treasury. He was given a chance to remedy his sin, but he threatened me to leave this island! I could not forgive such an insult. It was announced about the war and everyone was given a chance to choose his side. Your choice was wrong and you will pay for it. Resistance will not be tolerated! “. Richard ordered his soldiers to take every fourth Colossian man and put them with the captured soldiers. “I am Christian and will offer you one last chance to confess your sins to Templar priests, because you will not get my remission! “.

After confession all of these men were executed in front of the crowd…

Oh well, 'The Crusades' is a great mod, the work stopped unfortunately on it, since the camp mode showed a repeating ctd in the first 10 turns or so (which wasn't ever officially solved), so how do you come by that ... is it stable suddenly?

    Great AAR

    @Jingle Bombs
You mentioned a use of units in the Rome Medieval mod ... is 'The Crusades' free of permissions (i don''t think so), or did you guys get permission to use them? Can you pm me about this?

    Book I – Cyprus

    Chapter III – Mercenary captain

Richard spent only one week in Colossi. Locals seemed to be calm - it was hard to hear people talking in the streets. The reason for this was clear - many women were still mourning the deaths of their husbands. Richard rarely entered the town as his army was encamped nearby, but every time he walked down the streets he could not see anyone brave enough to look into his eyes. It was clear that the locals have learnt the lesson.

In the early February Richard left Colossi. Behind he left only a small garrison of local militia to guard the town. The Lionheart was going to besiege Limasol. This offence should have convinced Isaac to confront him. Limasol was situated on a beautiful southern Cyprus coast. It was a wealthy trading town with a large port. The town had strong trading ties with most of the Levant and Nile delta cities. Limasol was one of the stops for Byzantine merchants traveling in eastern Mediterranean. The loss of such town would be a large blow to Isaac as it also was the second largest town on the island.

When Richard reached the town he sent heralds to speak with the town governor. The news about the execution of Colossians had already reached the town, so Richard promised to leave population unharmed if they surrender. The governor of the town, an old merchant, whose sons were serving under Isaac, rejected the offer hoping that Isaac’s army will come to free the town. The town had no wall at all and its main defense was 11000 Byzantine troops garrisoned there.

Richard could have assaulted the town immediately, but he too was hoping for Isaac to come. Limasol heavily relied on trade so when Richard’s troops blocked the town from its port, locals were forced to suffer from hunger. It lasted for two more weeks until the governor, pressed by the locals, decided to sally. The command of the troops was given to an English mercenary - Lancelot, who was a skilled fighter, but lacked skill in command. He was the usual type of a mercenary – living from war, at the times of peace heavily drunk or in a company of women. He wasn’t very happy to do this job, but he has done a lot of even more unpleasant jobs before.

Richard deployed his troops on a hill. Infantry in front, archers behind them and knights on the left.

Lancelot’s plan was simple – charge the front and hope to kill as many as possible. He knew that it’s impossible to win so he saw no need to bother. Furthermore he wasn’t even paid for this. He was a brave man and the death did not bother him much. Lancelot prepared his troops, and started marching towards the enemy. The hail of arrows welcomed his force. Many were injured, but he pressed his men forward. It was important to meat the lines as soon as possible. Richard ordered his infantry to charge. At the same time he sent half of his knights to take down the archers and the other half to flank the enemy infantry.

Lancelot was fighting bravely, but the charge of the English knights simply teared his force to pieces. Byzantines began routing and Lancelot was left with only two men. The triplet fought bravely, but got surrounded and captured. The remaining forces were mercilessly ridden down by knights.

Richard himself joined the pursuit and the knights soon defeated all remaining resistance in the town streets. It was midday when Richard rode to the central square of the town where the remnants of the Byzantines gathered and was begging to spare their lives.

The Lancelot’s triplet was also brought to the square. At that moment the captives were already lined in four lines and it was clear that there are no more than 500 men. Although some of them were kept aside from the main bulk. Lancelot was also taken to that band of captives. Richard ordered to find the governor of the town. Not long ago two soldiers brought him in front of the king. “Old fool how are you going to explain your actions to me?” asked Richard. The old man kept silent. “Don’t avert your face, old man, I’m talking to you”. Man raised his eyes, but could not watch to the eyes of king. “You made a stupid decision and now more than 10000 of your men are lying dead on the field and the rest are here as my prisoners. What were you thinking, when rejected my offer? That Isaac will come to relieve you? You must be a fool to trust that man. I would be pleased if I could simply punish only you, but I can’t. All of you seem to be too stubborn to realize how miserable your situation is. I will not be that harsh this time, but you will remember this lesson till the end of your life, which I promise, is soon to come.” “Lock this man where you found him, set a guard and take care that he gets no food or water” – Richard ordered. He dismounted his horse and walked to the front of the captured soldiers. “Maybe you fought against your will, maybe not. It’s not important to me at all. All of you are soldiers and what’s important to me is how you fought. I am glad to see that some of you fought like true men and resisted till the end, while I can’t stand those who ran from the battlefield like small girls and were begging for mercy. You are not worth it and do not hope to get any. Those of you who fought well are given freedom and my pardon. You can go wherever you like. The rest prepare to confess your sins for the last time”.

The captives were executed and only a band of 80 men were given freedom. The quarter of Limasol population were sold to slavery. This was one more lesson to the enemies of Richard. English losses were minimal as they lost less than 1200 men.

Richard stayed in Limasol for one more week. One day, when the news about one more English navy victory was brought, a lone man requested Richard’s audience. Richard let the man enter his hall. “God sees your greatness oh noble king! I’m Lancelot, the leader of troops who fought against you a week ago and one of the blessed ones who received your pardon. I once more beg you to forgive me my sins. I’m a simple man, earning his living working as a mercenary. It just happened that I was forced to lead those men to battle. Now when I’m a free man I decided to get there and ask you, noble sir, maybe there is some work for a seasoned soldier?” “I have heard of your bravery soldier. I’m always pleased to see men fighting like you. Such enemy always deserves praise, but it is a rare thing these days. I need such men like you. There is going to be much fighting in the future so every brave soldier will find what to do.” Happiness filled the face of Lancelot. “Thank you my lord, I will prove my worth”. “Soon you will have a chance to prove this – we are going to meet Isaac’s army on the field.”

I've never heard of this. Maybe it's a fan made modification. Map is a bit too small to include more factions. The only thing that could be done is to correct some small mistakes and add some features which Caius had in mind, but not implemented. However it's still a great mod.
