Re: increase range
Upgrade the blacksmith and retrain them and put them on a hill for + range and + damage, but you can't get better accuracy unless you turn off fire ammo.

Re: increase range
I rarely use fire ammo. The rate of fire penalty makes me cry every time. I much prefer watching 10 units of longbowmen tearing into advancing melee, slowing down their charge when they get hit. The only times I use fire ammo are either when I'm purposefully trying to demoralize the enemy before I attack them, or when I need to conserve ammo.
As far as making your archers more effective - get them on high ground. Also, unless you have another counter in mind - always have them target lightly armored cavalry and infantry first, the arrow rain will tear them apart. It takes significantly upgraded top-tech archers (Retinue Longbowmen
) to deal effectively with plate infantry and heavy cavalry.

Re: increase range
Fire arrows and crossbows work against Heavy Infantry and Calvary better than normal arrows and guns are for mainly demoralizing purposes but still hurt.

Re: increase range
The easiest way to instantly increase range/damage is to always choose your position on the CAMPAIGN map such that you are uphill of your enemy on the battle map. Place your archers uphill. They will have a very marked advantage over the enemy's downhill archers.
