Waht is a good starting faction to play as besides Romans?
Waht is a good starting faction to play as besides Romans?
What do you want to get out of a game?
If you want a challenge you could try one of the smaller factions; Syracuse, Pergamum or Pontus.
If you want to try a phalanx/hoplite army then Macedon or one of the Greek factions; The Greek Cities or Epirus. Epirus is probably slightly harder with the proximity of Rome.
Carthage is far enough away from factions (apart from Syracuse) to allow some breathing space before getting your hands too dirty.
The Gallic Tribes are probably easier than the Germanic Tribes but each has it's own challenge.
If you want a real challenge, try Dacia, Armenia or Parthia.
Everyone has their own preferences and I am sure other players will suggest different factions.

Well I find Pergamum to be a great staring faction, many possibilities and
great skinned units, but thats just me find your own way.
Enjoy your playing.

When I pick my factions, I don't usually think about whether they have good starting position, good early units....etc.
What matters the most is whether I personally like the faction or not. In this case, I have a love for all eastern factions so Armenia, Parthia and Pontus are my number 1. choices. It's just that simple for me.
I could recommend Parthia to you, if you like relatively mobile warfare, arduous sieges and a giant faction in your neighborhood, waiting to be toppled by your iranian nomads. I don't know about you but I enjoyed the Parthian campaign immensely.
If you want a good challange don't play Parthia.I played them and it was easy.Seleukeia uses 99% phalangites that are peace of cake for horcearchers. In the early turns its a little bit difficult whit the money but after a while money won't be problem. When you have an empire you will have much problem with revoult(I finished the game with the romans and parthians and in both campaigns after you get a large empire revoults don't stop).
I just started a new campaign as Epirus.
Spending my time running back and forth fending off Macedon and Rome at the moment.
Pretty hectic, but good fun.
No time for slow building up just all out bloody warfare with two of the most powerful factions right from the start.
Hi,
play as Carthage, and kick the treacherous Romans out of Italy. They broke each and every treaty, one of them even said it would be necessary to destroy our capital !
And their sorry and ugly unseaworthy ships, no phoenecian would ever step aboard those planks if not to kill some Romans for breakfast.
They don't even know how to red-colour purple capes, instead they wear white ones ! Losers !!
Isn't all this reason enough?
Hrrrm.

grrmbl ... not in my game ... yet
What really astonished me is that Caesar rebuilt Carthage, even sported the same old name - what a humiliation lol

Well... It 'was' a pretty fancy city. I would have conquered it, massacred those that refuse to bow to my laws, than rebuilt it like it was always under my thumb. That's just me of course.
Anyways! If you want a challenge but a good position than I suggest trying out The Getae. My current campaign on H/M is doing well for them. I've taken afew southern cities but my house rules were to only invade free cities first and only invade others after they attacked me first. This has lead o Macedon and Rome turning into world powers at eachothers throats and ignoreing me. Mostly because I've taken the most land(since I 'can' expand far north aswell, just gotta compete with Germenia than).
It's been fun.
Though Armenia is proving fun. I'm unsure if you can actually recruit their Legionary's without editing a file, however... Cuz they're way better than Heavy Infantry.
Well as I have stated before, playing as Iberia is alot of fun.
I myself took all of the Iberian peninsula and then made up a pretty good
defence by using forts to block every entrance(except by sea) to my
flourishing land.
After making sure that everything was secure, I made a stack made up of
elites. I then send the stack by boat to the British island to establish a
Iberobritannian province.

Play Syracuse.
Great starting postion, Great looking hoplites. Nuff said!
I think you should choose some nation that has personal meaning to you. I mean I love rome an could never want to play any other faction....being from italy its just allways been my favorite faction...and what brought me to RS. So you should research a faction you want to play and if you like what they did i think it will really enhance your gameplay with sed faction....
Play as Armenia! Excellent mix of Horse Archers, cataphracts, phalanx and legionairres.
I just picked Rome because they're badass. Segmentata armour and their rectangular scuta just look cool. Oh, and i'm a quasi-Imperialist, so it's nice to be able to let out my inner megalomaniac once in a while!![]()
