Default Was 2007 a Great Year for Gaming?

I think this question was asked before but I forget what most people thought...was 2007 one of the best, if not the best, year in gaming for a long time now. I just thought about all the games released this past year and didn't realize how many of them were top quality title and extreme noise makers in the gaming community. Thoughts?

Here's a little list of the better titles that came out in 2007

    Assassin's Creed
    Bioshock
    Call of Duty 4
    The Orange Box
    Mass Effect
    God of War II
    S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl
    Guitar Hero III
    Rock Band
    World in Conflict
    Crysis
    The Darkness
    Supreme Commander
Medieval 2: Total War - Kingdoms
    Halo 3
    Europa Universalis III

Yeah. Personally I'd also add Resistance: Fall of Man to that list. Still a fantastic one regardless.

No I disagree. At the end of 2006 I thought 2007 was going to be the best year for games (more specifically for PC games) , however by the end of the year I felt under-whelmed by all of the new releases.

    • Bioshock - I can't stand this game and I can't believe some of the review scores this game got. The combat felt as if it had been developed by amateurs, the storyline and the voice acting went some way to make up for it though.
    • Call of Duty 4 - The best game of 2007 IMO, but I didn't play it until 2008.
    • The Orange Box - I refused to buy this as I already owned HL2 and EP1, for me it was a rip off. It took 6 months before the developers would release Ep2 on it's own.
    • S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl - Could have been a lot of better then what it was. The delays in development show as the graphics look dated and out of place.
    • Guitar Hero III - On the PC this game really doesn't work
    • World in Conflict - I was not impressed with this at all.
    • Crysis - A game that can still bring a good like computer to it's knees. Over engineered, bad storyline.
    • Supreme Commander - A solid RTS but nothing special, but it is good fund to play.
    • Medieval 2: Total War - Kingdoms - Again nothing new, a tried and tested formula.
    • Europa Universalis III - This franchise has lot's fans, I've tired it but it wasn't my to my liking.

I don't play to many console games, but from what I understand in terms of revenue 2007 was one of the most successful years in video game history. But does revenue only make 2007 a great year for games?

I don't remember playing one game that really stood out in terms of overall quality. Had I played Call of Duty 4 I would have nominated it, but as for the rest of the titles they really didn't do anything for me.

2008 is going to be a better year then 2007.

I'ma copy freddie boy up there...

    Assassin's Creed - Over Hyped. I semi-liked it.
Bioshock - Great Game, I still can't look at 60's style writing without laughing about it...
Call of Duty 4 - Ohh...My...Gawd...Simply the best.
The Orange Box - Eh, pointless I already had it.
Mass Effect - I mean it's ok...but not my thing.
God of War II - *yawn* Just another GoW...
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl - Amazing, though its GFX did screw it off, Storyline is rather awesome.
    Guitar Hero III - SUCKS
    Rock Band - ROCKs...haha...Band Humor..
World in Conflict - C'mon killing soviets gets old?
Crysis - I enjoyed it, my computer didn't but I did.
    The Darkness - What?
Supreme Commander - Honestly, this is a really crappy RTS game. I've played hundreds this rates maybe in the very very low echelon..
Medieval 2: Total War - Kingdoms - It's TW...Wait can we bad mouth TW on TWCenter?
Halo 3 - Eh Never was huge Halo nerd...I do enjoy the storyline though
    Europa Universalis III - It's good, I can't say much since I haven't played...

'08 is going to be amazing from:
    Empire: Total War
    The Force Unleashed
Wrath of the Lich King(Sorry had to say it...)
    World in Conflict: Soviet Assault
and a few others I can't seem to remember.

    Will do my own

Assassin's Creed= Overhyped, a game that went flying off the starting line and then did a nose dive right into the pavement after around 5 meters.
Bioshock = Overhyped as well but atleast good
    Call of Duty 4= Awesome
    The Orange Box= Still awesome
    Mass Effect= Awesome indeed
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl = Overhyped but good enough
Guitar Hero III= A decent game
    Rock Band= an awesome game
    World in Conflict= Great IMO
Crysis= Cool game, too short tho and should have been optimised better.
The Darkness= One of the best stories in games ever
    Supreme Commander= A good game.
Medieval 2: Total War - Kingdoms= Well not much to say really. It's great.
Halo 3 = Very overhyped and only really pleased the ones that overlooked it's faults without fixing it so more could have enjoyed it. And castrated MP.
Europa Universalis III= Will always be good even tho it took 2 Expansion packs to get there.

Hey now, there are some excellent mods for STALKER, I'd say because of it's modability (and what the mods do for it) it's the best FPS of the year.

    Sup Com is da ****.

Europa Universalis 3 owns every game out on the market, period.

2007 was quite good with the games which came out.

As for 2008 I don't know if there will be any great games for the remaining 6 months of this year. Some games don't have a release date or will be delayed perhaps.

None of those apply to me tbh, but I have my own choices but as I said, not sure if they will be released this year.

One of the best years in a while, I wouldn't say great I would just say good.

The thing is that gaming has been in a slump for a long time, now its finally showing recovery. I think a really great year has yet to come.

2007 was missing a few things for it to be really a great year. The RPGs for example were mostly flat with only Mass Effect really delivering.

IMO its better than 2008, so far.

For a REAL great year you need the following:
A Baldurs Gate style RPG with a great story, conversations, mostly non linear gameplay (ie. not a bethesda game)
A good space or flight sim.
    Something innovative, like Spore
A great unifying RTS, Starcraft 2.
A great non-cliche shooter, like what Half-Life or Deus Ex was and possibly what Fallout 3 COULD be.
A great TBS or empire building game, EU3 or Galciv 2. - needs a good AI so CA games don't count.

I think the really great year has yet to come, I think if Starcraft 2, Mass Effect sequel, Fallout 3 (if its good), and Stardocks fantasy TBS all comes out in one year that would be what a great year would START to look like.

Think of the year Baldurs Gate 2 came out, there was a great game in each genre. Not 10 different shooters 5 different RTS and nothing much of anything else like recent years. Too many overhyped games that didn't deliver and short flavor of the weeks in 07.... 08 looks no different aside from Spore.

edit: Hoping for an Alpha Centauri sequel soon, Civ 4's popularity makes me hope.

So if to trust you, we will never have a great year in gaming only good ones.

Because it will never come out a BG-like rpg.
Not to mention plus all the other criteriars..

I agree, 2007 was just "ok" for me, but that's because the big hitters like Bioshock, Call of Duty 4 were underwhelming. Bioshock I flatout hated and Call of Duty 4 I'm probably never playing a CoD game again, they are all so exactly the same. I don't know the last good years, 2001, 2002?

I do think Persona 3 came out in 2007, and that was a great game. You also had a bunch of good DS games. Overall good, but there were no "masterpieces" that I will remember forever, just a bunch of high quality games you chuck in the bin when you finish them.
