Burst fire for missile troops

Hi, I'm not sure if this belongs more in scripting than animation but here goes.

Basically I'm trying to make a new unit based on the Chinese repeating crossbow and was wondering if and how I can make them shoot in bursts. I technically know how to make them shoot full auto, but I was wondering if I could instead make them shoot five arrows or so, pause to reload, then shoot another five.

I'll try to elaborate if I'm being unclear, but in the meantime - anyone know if and how this can be done?

I knew it, there's a unit which already does this but which was escaping my mind

actually there's quite a few units that do this such as rebaults(sp?) and monster rebaults(sp?) but their all siege weapons which may cause problems
