    Default Help with descr_strat

    After quite a few problems trying to mod a mod, I have decided to just mod the vanilla files, to add a new faction, toulouse.

    The error im currently encountering is when i start a new campaign with toulouse, i instantly get the message "victory conditions have failed" and it throws me back to the main menu.

    in system log, i get these errors

    trying to attach a non-spy Guilhem(toulouse) to settlement Toulouse(france) which is invalid.

    My descr_strat is attached, if anyone can have a look at it, the relevant faction is just above the diplomacy section, so just at the bottom. I can't work out how to get the family tree correct, as I think this is the reason for the victory conditions thing, it acts like all my factions leaders/heirs have died, hence my faction ends. I copied the french section, and just removed what wasn't relevant, and renamed what was, keeping the format the same as the origional.

    If I were you, I would not put a family tree before testing the faction. I'd put just that :

    The system.log also says that you didn't add the new names to your descr_names and names.txt files.

    Managed to fix the family tree problems. As for the names thing, was a bit odd, as the names guy and marie du lac were all in the games original names database, but got all that fixed.

    I can get onto the campaign mode fine, and map, but when I try to play a battle the game crashes. The loading screen comes up, it fully loads the battle, I get maybe a .5 sec glimpse of the battle field, then ctd, with the unspecified error message comming up. The battle im currently attempting is a seige, but since there are no entries I can find for ownership or useability of seige items(laddrs, rams etc) and since I have 2 rams built, I dont think its linked to those. The only units I have available for toulouse at the moment peasents and NE bodyguard(and late version).

    Tested with a non seige battle, get the same crash. Get a slightly longer glimpse at the battle, as from what I can see, my units are standing arrayed for battle, properly displayed, however, where the ground should be, there is just white, so perhaps this is something to do with the crash?

    The system log just says there has been an unspecified error. It might be an error in the battle models file, but havent seen anything in it, and running the matlab checker on it doesnt find any syntax errors.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Did you delete descr_geography files ?
    Did you mod your descr_model_db ?

    If it is a siege and you are using the kingdoms exe file than you might not have all the necessary files for the burning oil and other goodies.

    Not using kingdoms, dont have it installed, so doubt that is the issue.

    As for descr_geography and descr_model_db, didnt touch them, I didnt copy them over to my mod files, so they are still in the vanilla folder.

    After some extra testing, by removing my ability to build peasants, I found that it wasnt them causing the crash. Got some slighty longer glimpses of the start of battle. Think the reason I seen the white map, was that the ground was covered in snow Seen a couple of glimpses of grass, so it isnt a map issue. I was thinking maybe the pre battle speaches might be causing the crash, but no idea on how to test that.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Ill have a look, never crossed my mind before, ill have a look and see if i can find anything wrong.

    Tested it just there, as found the descr_banners_new in the vanilla folder didnt contain my new faction, as it should have, so copied over the one in my mod folder, and checked it for errors, but it was clean. Still got the ctd though.

    Also tried disabaling speeches in my mods cfg file, didnt make any difference, still get ctd, so the problem is rather elusive at this point.

    I definately have ownership, and the ability to build the units I have in my army when i test this (either just ne bodyguard with a character, bodyguard and peasants, or bodyguard, peasants and mercs).
    And they all have entries in the battle_models, which has been syntax checked, and comes out error free, and I have checked the entries I added for correct amount of spaces, and that they are in the right places. All seems fine, so I really have no idea where this crash is coming from.

    If they are in the vanilla folder the game will crash, even if you are playing your mod. They need to be removed. But then you are able to get into campaign mode and is not an issue. I still think it is a battlemodel issue. Can you show us the the entries for the units?

    Also, you should add your faction in descr_banner_new, it can causes crahs.

    What unit did you add in your exports_descr_unit ?

    each section has the normal unit, then unit ug1 shown there. I remembered to change all the numbers of factions using the unit, as the syntax checkers turning up no errors attest too. I added the french entries aswell, as thats what i copied exactly.

    I have the descr_banner_new in the vanilla and mod folder, with all the relevant entries.

    Checked for derscr_geography, and descr_models_db, dont have any of them. I have descr_geography_new.txt and .dll, but I presume these are required, and don't cause the crash. So It must be a problem somewhere, just no idea where

    That's why your game crashs, delete them


    Also, give the entire entry in model_db, perhaps you did a error just the faction under toulouse...

    Ah cheers on the posting info Any ideas on the problem? Im going to have another look at battle_models I think.

    Can't find any errors there, sadly, so no ideas on where to look. I think I may have to start again, but I dont know.

    The checker for the modeldb file will only check for default factions. If there is an error with Toulouse than you are stuck. You have to edit it to include the custom factions (see your descr_sm_factions file). Not sure how you do it in matlab, it is a breeze in python (py extension).
