Default What do you think of this Autistic Pride Day?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autistic_Pride_Day

    Yay or nay?

I ask because this struck me as different than oh say Gay Pride Day, but the same in a way.

Difference in neural make-up (with the gays being much gawdier *guffaw*) yet still able to contribute is the main point here.

Gay Pride is cooler I think coz they have colorful parades. LOL

Are autistic people being oppressed ??
Because last time I checked they are being treated just like people with damp or similar and yet you don't see them having a pride parade.

We might as well just celebrate Mentally Retarded Pride Day, or Welfare Recipient Pride Day because we all know that a person of lesser capabilities and productivity should be celebrated. This is rediculous. This is not a bash on the autistic or the retarded but rather a statement that a person of vastly lesser capabilities should not be proud or celebrated. The day I congratulate someone for being retarded is the day I go on welfare and mooch off of my society, while contributing nothing or very little. We need to be removing these elements from our society, not celebrating them.

Chat, party and get drunk with other introverts! Would be pretty awesome.

Are gay people being oppressed? Often, I feel oppressed by gay pride photos, that is the most of it. They're generally quite repulsive to any person of good taste.

With regard to the original poster's argument. We don't need any more silly manifestations of self-centeredness, I think. Not from autistics, not from green aliens from Syrius B, not from anyone.

Since when did you have a monopoly on "good taste"?

    Self-centeredness?

All it is aimed to do is offer a bright moment for some people with Autism and to dispel ignorance surrounding their community. They don't want to hurt you. They don't want to take your home. All they want to do is make the world a better place - that is not self-centeredness.

So you shouldn't have a problem with it, unless of course you hate equality and freedom.

As a gay man and someone who teaches autistic children I probably have a different take on this than most of those who post here. Without wanting to seem too patronising, I might even have a better understanding than most here too.

Recently, I listened to a speaker who was autistic. She described Autism as a 'social disability'. It must be said, though, that many equate this with learning disabilities too, but this is not true. as it happens, the autistic children I do teach do have severe learning difficulties. The autism amplifies these problems, as a general rule of thumb, though for some it is so severe as to, probably, be main component of their difficulties generally.

It seems to me that most who have autism are either unaware or, for them it is not a matter of pride (or shame, for that matter) as they, in the severe forms I encounter, at least, simply find it hard to relate to others and understand their own feelings/emotions without having to deal with the prospect of meeting up and proclaiming this aspect of their existence. By all means have an autism awareness day to try and combat the woeful ignorance that pervades society.

Now being gay has nothing what so ever to do with social abilities or learning difficulties, as such I find it offensive that both are equated with each other, My interpretation in the way the original post was made was to smear both groups, as both have negative connotations - though I am probably overly sensitive about this (I am always protective of those in my charge, for example) and apologise in advance if I am wrong.

As to good taste - well beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say. I am sure many would find of the most sophisticated things we like as being rather poor too. If there is one thing that Gay Pride should be adopted and that is of acceptance of differences.

It is OK to be different.

As to Asperger's Syndrome, well that falls within the Autistic Spectrum of Disorders (ASD). As more and more is known about autism the broader its definition is.

If I get off work and if it is anything similar to any other holiday that give us an excuse to drink then I'm all for it........Seriously though when is this crap gonna stop. Holidays are set to celebrate and not just give some "non for profit" group their jollies.
