    Default Unit Sizes

Could someone please explain to me which factors influenced the determined size (number of soldiers) of each unit? Is there any historical relevance? Is it a matter of not overloading the BAI? Play balance? It seems that most unit strengths are a factor of 12 (i.e. 12, 24, 60). Just wondering why this was before I experiment with different unit sizes. Thanks in advance.

unit sizes are generally for balance

theres 30 for cavalry, 60 for good quality infantry, 75 generally for militias, and 100 for peasants (on medium unit scale)

i'm referring to the values in the export_descr_unit file not in the actual game. the values in the file are used to determine sizes in the game depending on the unit scale you choose.

I dont know for certain but maybe the number are factors of 12 so that you can get a nice square or rectangle for the unit formation on the battlefield?

having more soldiers in a battle will affect the BAI apart from that it is a case of balancing. Im not sure wether it uses factors of 12 for units though, when i was playing RTW, on small size the units were about half the size, medium = size said in the descr file and large doubled them.

remember that huge unit sizes will really deplete youre population as you build them, i remember stacking cairo with town militia completely and reducing the population to 300 people... (it was a plague and as plagues take away a percentage of population having them all in build stack saves them so you dont lose as many peeps).

    anyway, i digress lol

Actually M2TW did away with the whole depleting/increasing your population when you recruit/disband units mechanic.
