Default [RS AAR] Sons of Baal - A Carthage AAR

I'll be starting this up sometime soon (probably tomorrow). Here are the settings:

    Faction: Carthage
    Difficulty: H/H
Game: Roma Surrectum 1.5 with 0 Turn recruitment with no tweaks except fixing a typo which doesn't allow eastern factions and Carthage the best farms, which prevents them from getting their best units.
House Rules: No cheats except toggle_fow to give updates on progress of other factions
    Goals: World Domination baby!

Prince of Macedon posted awhile ago to put AAR intentions and announcements in the sticky at the top of the page. Once you get something, then come here.

Well, I just tried a hard difficulty battle with Carthage against Rome, and while I won, I lost about half my troops. So this time around fighting Rome won't be as easy as in my first campaign.

I'll be starting this AAR today, I just need to get some pictures for the story.

    CHAPTER ONE

    WAR COUNCIL

My grandfather was a scribe. My father was a scribe. And now I, Magon, am a scribe. And I have been ordered to record what shall take place in our lands, the Carthaginian empire. Our leader, the noble Hanno, decided to call a war council in the year 473 since the founding of our cursed rival's, the Romans, capital.

Picture of the Royal family, and the World as We Know It

My long time friends, Hannibal and Hasdrubal, were able to convine their father to allow me to record what would happen, giving me the first break of my career. Thank Baal for them. The following is what was happened:

"My sons and grandsons, I am growing old. Baal has giving me a long life, and our empire is a great nation among nations." Hanno started, but was interupted by a toast to Baal. "But we are at a crossroads now. We have many new threats, and one old one, and in order to secure our empire as the greatest that ever existed by Baal's will we must begin a campaign of expansion. Look here at this map."

    Sicily At the Current Time

"No exploration at all has occured! How will we no when those cursed Greeks of Syracuse will attack?! Theophanes, have I not given you command of the resources there? Do something with them! You are the commander of Sicily in Baal's name!"

"Father, I am sorry. I am preparing to start building forces when I return."

"Good. I am sorry I am so rash, but tthe situation there right now is unacceptable. Now Burrhus, you command the islands of our empire. You know that these are prime targets for the cursed Romans. What do you plan on doing?"

"Father, I plan on building defences on the islands closest to the Romans, while building an army on Palma to attack the Gaulic rebel lands north of us."

"Excellent! Theodekles, commander of Africa, what are your plans?"

"To expand west, and to send reinforcements to the other commanders until our borders are secure."

"Theages and Hasdrubal, what are your plans for Spain?"

    Spain At the Current Time

"Simply put, Father, to crush the Iberian barbarians under ur feet when the time comes."

"And, lastly, Hannibal, what are your plans?"

"To build up an army composed of mercenaries and our own men, and to march across the mountains to hopefully meet up with Burrhus' army that should have taken the rebel settlements, resupply there, and then to march through these mountains, the Alps, into the Roman heartland." Hannibal was beeming with confidence, I thought. I had never seen him look so proud of his plan. It was a truly amazing proposal, but what would Hanno say?

"This plan would take extreme care to perform. Do you think that you are up to the task?"

"Yes, I am, and Baal will guide me to victory."

Hanno smiled at this remark. "Very well. Hasdrubal, you will help Hannibal build up his army while you wait for the Iberians to leave themselves open, understood?"

    "Of course, Father."

"And now that we know what our plans are for the future, let us drink to Baal, and the Carthaginian empire!"

The meeting greatly increased movement in the empire. Hanno ordered for a huge building program to take place, to bring more trade to the empire and hopefully less to the Romans.

Great start so far, Con Jeb! +rep. Subscribed.

I'm always happy to see non-Roman AARs and non-Greek AARs, they add some spice.

    Thanks guys.

I'll go ahead and get started on the next chapter. I just took pictures and haven't done anything yet.

EDIT: I now have the pictures for a mini update (this next chapter will probably have a two or three parts), but I'll wait until tomorrow to post them, to see if anyone else checks this AAR.

    CHAPTER TWO

    PART ONE

    BEGINNING THE CAMPAIGN

I am writing from Melite now, a small city on the isles of Malta in the Sicily province. It was to be part of the grand building project ordered by Hanno, and since it needed a governor, I had to find a local to do the job. I found a young man worthy of it, but that's about all his role in life will be. The city didn't even have walls!

The summary of the building project was to create walls for undefended cities, farms, temples, and in the larger cities acadamies. When we were scarce on money Hanno ordered the governors to build the cheapest buildings on our lists, which happened to usually be stables and practice ranges. These would save us money now, and would form our training sites in the future.

Hanno, while this was going on, ordered our diplomat to board our small fleet in order to arrive at the Roman heartland, but they were meet by a Roman fleet just off the coast. The battle was lop-sidded, to say the least. Our diplomat was dropped off safely afterwards and immediatly headed for Capua.

The Scroll of What Happened At the Diplomatic Meeting with the Romans

Many of our governors questioned this move to end the war between us and Rome, but Hanno answered them by saying, "We are not engaged in a massive war with them at the moment, so let us profit from the lull in the fighting with trade." A wise man he most certainly is.

But our diplomat didn't stop there. He next went to speak with Kreon of Epirus, a general of the Epeiros nation. He was able to work out a wonderful deal with him.

The Scroll of What Happened At the Diplomatic Meeting with Kreon of Epirus

Meanwhile in Spain, Hannibal had ordered the Spanish spy Vettias Gisgo north, to see what was in the path of Hannibal's planned route.

    Vettias Gisgo's Report

Both Hannibal and Hasdrubal had been training men for the upcoming trip through the Alps, and had recruited mercenaries, but both were not sure if sending the men they had trained out so early in their campaign would be of good use, so Hannibal decided to go scouting himself. No problems occured during his scouting mission, so he decided to attack the city head on.

    Hannibal on the Hunt

Gisgo had opened the gates of the city, and as Hannibal rode inside he was informed that the small garrison was in the town square. The following is the account of one of Hannibal's bodyguards of the battle:

"The Greek archers in the square (Baal knows what they were doing in Iberia) at first decided to target the men rather than the horses, and their pathetic arrows bounced off our armor like flies on an elephant. Their second barrage, however, came just as we were four feet away, and my dear friend Mago's horse was shot out from uder him and was crushed. By the time I had realized what had happened we had ran smack into the group of archers. Hannibal, having trained with us from our youth and being our loyal friend and master, cried out, "Avenge Mago's death, let no one live!""

    The Battle of Saguntum

"We were so filled with rage at this point that the archers began to run from our horses, trying to escape into nearby houses. But it was too late for them. We let no one live, and Mago's death was futhur avenged by the extermination of the city, killing three fourths of the cities population. Mago was buried in the town square, and a memorial was erected above his grave, saying, "Here lies Mago, a true servant of Baal". May he rest in peace."

OOC: That was one of the bodyguards. They both have similar names: Magon and Mago.

I wanted to include that one stinkin death somehow, and I did end up killing everyone in the city by accident, so...

OOC: The eastern factions have the same problem, it makes Armenia not able to recruit their legionaries. Here is the link to the thread.

It will be on there, I think page 1.

I've had the next part of the story already set but I will probably post it tomorrow. I bet you guys know which faction decided to cancel the ceasefire.

I expect to see a superpowered Hannibal in the age of 50 with maximum command stars, and possibly a robust army at hand with elephants and such to ride down Rome!

OOC: On my M/M account he is 33, has 10 command, 9 management, 10 influence, went from being of the eagles to the conquerer, and all of Rome belongs to him. It rocked. But this time he needs elephants to do the job right. No more spies. He'll for sure have Numidians and Celts.

I've kinda taken a break today, so expect this either later today or tomorrow.

    CHAPTER TWO

    PART TWO
    BEGINNING THE CAMPAIGN

With Saguntum added to our empire, our empire continued to add more men to the military. Amoung them was a man by the name of Chaeremon Corduba, who was adopted by Burrhus. He was a young men who was capable of defending whatever his portion of the empire was.

    Chaeremon Corduba

Also during this small lull in the fighting occured many new diplomatic meetings.

Diplomatic Meeting with the Free Peoples

The Free People's trade will bring great benefits to Carthage, until we decide to bring these slaves down. But these are just a humble scribe's thoughts.

Diplomatic Meeting with the Gallic Tribes

Having the barbarians on our side will be verey beneficial.

    Theages Meets with Iberian Diplomat

Theages was also able to obtain an alliance with the Iberians. Hanno was furious at the thought of being allies with them, but Theages was able to explain that it would buy Hannibal more time to train his army to take the fight to Rome. Hanno agreed with this, but still hasn't gottne over their argument.*

*I, Magon, am not chosing a side here, let the records show. I am only writing down what has occured.

    World Diplomacy

The Greeks and the Macedonians are at each other's throats again. It is not a suprise to the empire.

Around this time Roxane, Burrhus' daughter, turned twelve years old, making her a suitable wife for any man. Out of many possible husbands Chaeremon Hadrumentum was found. He was a very young man, but was capable at his age. Their wedding was the cause of much celebrating across the empire, espicially Palma.

    Chaeremon Hadrumentum

Hannibal was in the process of asking Burrhus to start the invasion of southern Gaul in order to set up a base for Hannibal's forming army. Chaeremon Hadrumentum, who was at the Burrhus' war meetings, asked if he could lead the army, and to bring glory to the royal family as a gift to his wife and step-father. Burrhus accepted this without hesitation. The results of his expedition were astounding.

    Battle Statistics

But soon news reached Hannibal about a renewed threat to Carthage. The Romans had broken the ceasefire already.

    Roman Traitors

Hopefully the currently garrison commander has not incured Baal's wrath in any way, or he shall be dead very soon.

Interesting! I havent seen a Non-Roman or Non-Greek AAR in quite awhile. Some reason the other choices aren't as popular. None the less, great AAR! I wish you the best of luck.
