    Default Kingdom of Jerusalem

    Hello All,

I'm fairly new to the mod so forgive me if this has been raised before. I tried Genoa first - great faction - very interesting. Obviously much more difficult than vanilla played on VH but still quite winnable

However, trying the KOJ, has been the biggest challenge I've had since MTW1. Your starting position as is it was in real life. It is tenuous - you are clutching onto to a set of cities & castles. To survive, you have to make peace with folks you would have thought would be your enemy.

I couldn't hold onto the big J after a jihad assaulted it so I found myself falling back & for the first time being in danger of defeat. The Byz nicked Cyprus so I'm pinned to the coast with Antioch constantly threatened.

The financial situation is also challenging - sure you have some powerful units but they cost so much - it's tough to sustain them. These means in the field I'm getting thrashed but can hold my own in most sieges.

In summary, it is a great faction to try & I've found that it has not followed the normal course of reaching such a mass so soon that you cannot be defeated. I am still very much hanging on with a mixture of a few elite units & lots of crappy ones after 20-30 turns...

That's the sign of a good mod!!!

I was in a similar situation in my recent game. When all Muslim faction send two Jihad stacks (including the Mongols) against me, I had to quit.

Biggest problem (as you stated), upkeep costs are to high. The crappy Templar Sergeants cost 490 with an upkeep of 200 (I may have already changed the upkeep).

I may have to lower the recruiting costs to make this faction a fair play.

I wonder why Mongols have Islamic religion, they were shamanists that time, they even almost annihilated that religion. In case Mongols werent Islamic KoJ faction would have possible ally on the oposing side of front.

The Mongols embraced all religions as they grew. Islam was a popular one. But Paganism is what they originally started out as.

And - belive it or not - that would be historicaly accurate. See Franco-Mongol alliance.

EDIT: And if we can not make Mongols pagans, then the right choise would be to make them Christians, because many of them were Nestorian Chirstians.

I wondered the same thing, along with Genghis Khan's age >to young< and a whole slew of other strange things, like the Hohenstaufen's calling the shots in the early era in the HRE and William the Conqueror being a Plantagenet. But ahh well, what can ya do.

Man I am playing a VH, VH campaign with the Templars. This is my first ever time as playing as the templars and first time playing a campaign in Stainless Steel 6. I have the Real recruitment and "realistic supplies" sub mods.

It has been difficult. At the outset I used a mercenary ship to gather all my military besides my faction leader.( I was planning on keeping Tortosa still) But I felt I needed another source of income and a possible escape plan from the Fatmid hordes.

I landed at Smyrna(sp?) and with my diplomat I was making alliances with everyone minus Venice. I captured the settlement. I wanted Rhodes but did not want to war with Byzantine. I prepared for war against Venice and had Iraklion in my sights.

I landed at an opportune moment so that I could take Iraklion without an actually assault of the city walls. I will still trying to keep my army intact for defense of this settlement against further aggression from venice.( so an actual assault would not be wise) I won the battle and then declared a cease fire with Venice. A byzantine diplomat approached me at symnra and I purchased rhodes.

But to stop the Fatmid hordes who blitz every settlement in the holy land, I had the pope declare a crusade against Cairo. Although I did not participate once a allied crusading army approached the passage of antioch. I wisely had my peasant army besiege the city and I would assault the walls. The allied crusading army were my reinforcements. I had cracked the gate and watched the crusaders destroy the garrison. (I dont think I could have taken it with my meager armies.)

The crusaders went on to capture Cairo and the Fatmids were too busy to encroach on my lands. However everything turned south from here. Fatmids succeeded in recapturing Cairo and a jihad was declared against Constantinople. The twin full stack armies were followed by smaller 8 unit armies. They took Aleppo and Damascus. I recruited an army that included 8 peasant units, two peasant archers, 2 unarmored light/medium cavalry, three generals and two units of turk horse archers. I stood at the bridge to tortosa and waited. The jihad armies passed by and went on to capture Constantinople successfully. The smaller armies united into two full stack armies. One full stack attacked me on the bridge and I won a heroic victory. I was surprised I won so decisively considering I have a peasant army.

The other army laid siege to Antioch and I won another heroic victory with the same army. Although I am able to recruit sergeant spearmen, I only had 4 of them as the garrison to Tortosa. I did not use them in field battles because I would not be able to replenish losses due to the real recruitment. I only had like the second level barracks. Although I would use them as a strategic reserve force if I encountered a battle I could not win with merely peasants.

Well after I defeated the two armies I was able to capture lightly defended Aleppo. I captured Adana and its worn out armenian garrison(they fought a number of battles against the seljuks) I have sent templar spearmen from Iraklion as reinforcements to my new kingdom that is emerging in the holyland.

    Ref the KOJ,

Am playing as the, 6.1 set to H/H and it is a challenge. The game year has reached 1261 and I have all but eliminated the Fatimids, control most of their settlements and castles and also occupy Cyprus.

Oddly though I am now at war with France over.......Marseille. I bribed French Rebels to hand it over to a Family member and Diplomat who were in France recruiting mercenaries. Now the French State would very much like their premier Mediterranean Port back and am under seige.

    All very interesting!

I meant with possible aliance between Mongols and KOJ just bcs I knew about their religious situation that was the reason why I wrote I know "something". As I wrote Mongols almost annihilated Islam if there was no succesion war back in the heart of their Empire.
Those who were able to survive as Templars or KoJ (though I think the latter one is more a challenge) on hard or very hard dificultie I salute you, guys. Great work!

I agree with the comment about the KoJ units. I may not have the right barracks but the selection is very limited with some real big costs in there. The crossbow guys are just out of my price range - I'm mostly stuck with those crappy genoese sailors.

I'm looking forward to getting the better units if I survive that long. Also, I have lost the Big J - so I am the kingdom of J without the J!!

I changed stats for myself for twohanded units so those Guards of Antioch or Canons of Holy Sepulchre have to fear missiles only. I wonder if it would be possible to make crusades not valid for Templars, KoJ and Teutons for they were crusaders by their proffesion why then go to Europe for crazy excomunicated city?

I have been playing with KoJ and i have never had any problems with the faction. I eliminated Egypte,Turkye, kwarazmian empire and the mongols. You just need to be good friends with the pope and call crusades everytime you can Trust me,Gods armies are powerfull You just have to know how to use them.

If you really want a challenge----> TRY teutonic order, you have to fights againgst novogrod, lithuania and principality of kiev Thats a challenge, trust me

I am playing exactly as them and most of the time Ive been besieged. Pity crossbows are useless on walls. But finally I have som better income to field more Order spearmen and some knights.

I think Zuma's mod changes the Mongols to pagan. Check around in the sub mod forum.
