Double left clicking on a unit in battle (while paused) does the trick. Otherwise, right click on the unit card. Try double left clicking on the card, if it doens't work, your out of luck.

In the empire window, either right click on a unit card in an army, city or fleet. Or go to the building details window, right click a military building and then right click a unit name.
In battles, right click on a unit card when the game is paused. Double left click on enemy units to see their profiles.

I think double left click is the only way for you. But just a question... If you can't right click, then how can you tell armies to move in a campaign map, and command units to move in battle? Or are you just saying that right clicking doesn't make the unit details show up?
