The game was developed by Creative Assembly and released on September 22, 2004.

The endeavors of the player involve a duality of turn-based strategy and 3D real-time tactical battles. The high-quality 3D graphics engine is able to render over thirty thousand men on a single battlefield. The strategic and tactical modes integrate such that the landscape for the battles is the same as seen on that particular spot on the strategic map where the armies meet.
Ok there is no doubt it is the best-selling, and probably most succesfull game that the Creative Assembly has released. But 4 years have past and two new Total War titles which were, Medieval 2: Total War and the upcoming Empire: Total War. Personally, Rome will always be a Total War icon for me. Every now and then i'll play it and I know that there are many others who still do but, I am now starting to wonder, is Rome reaching the end?

i think RTW will always live on in our minds, but certianly in it's many mods.
CA was very smart realesing the files, so people could mod it.
this way their game can live on for longer.

RTW will indeed always be something special, if you see how it beated M2TW...

i think that when CA will make special programs to make it even easier to mod ETW (i heard about this somewhere) that it will even live longer then rtw

Rome is my favorite Total War game. I consider it a classic; there will always be games with better graphics and new things, but it still has a certain level of enjoyment that can never be taken away from it.

I have M2TW and Kingdoms, but I still play Rome more. I do like some aspects of M2, but I always find myself coming back to Rome. I look forward to Empires, and one of the first mods I will be looking for is a Roman-era mod; especially if it is a "remake" of Rome (with the separate Roman factions, ect).

Even though Empires will have a lot of new (and better) features, I still see myself coming back to Rome after I beat the campaign a few times.

No way is this then end for RTW. There are still tones of people who play it online, every day modders churn out new things to put together into new mods, and people ask about how to mod RTW, how to make it better.... Imo, RTW will continue for a long long time to come.

Nope. Medieval II has laughable support for online play which is why you find more people playing R:TW online per day.

Also, Medieval II suffers from cookie-cutter unit selections for many factions. R:TW offers a unique set of units for most factions.

Rome will always live on in my mind. The fact that I find one of my four sets of the game every 3 weeks also keeps it there. Now, if I could find one of my stupid CD keys for online play, that would be nice.

Just buy a new copy, it's maybe 10 bucks in most countries. Rome will always be my favourite game, simply because so many people love it and work for it.
It's just a great game, and because of that I will play it for a long time to come.

Two cents here - I just bought M2TW to keep up my jones after RTW was confiscated and hidden somewhere, and I find something about the graphics and play not nearly as appealing as RTW. Can't put my finger on it. I also like RTW vanilla better than any mod I've played. I particularly resent any changes to the music, which I like wafting through the house in those ethereal arias.

People still play and mod Jagged Alliance 2, its 10 years old and in 2d. Why won't Rome carry on in the same way?

rtw is the only ancient era game that has so much realism its not just a classic its a masterpiece. I have had it for three years and I'v never stopped playing it. I paused and played mtw2 for a while but then went back to rtw. There is no game like this where you can take a small roman nation and build it to the greatest ever or take the falling empire of the seleucids and rebuild it to make a master piece. All I can say is ROMA VICTRX!!!!!!

RTW's time period and modding base (which is extremely well set up) will keep it alive for years to come. I see no end to its playability in the near future. Hell, Starcraft is 10 years old and its got a huge fan base, so RTW should be able to do a least that, as no game (barring a well-done R2TW) will be able to equal it.

Well it may last for another year. But yeah its the end of the era.
Oh there will be some die-hards. But most of modders will probably move on. and the mass market certainly will.

It is a great game but if Empire is as great as we all expect it to be it may be the end of rome minus the diehard fans and the multiplayer aspects (which I believe are better than MTW2). I'll probably play it in the future because my computer can barely run MTW2 without too many problems nevermind ETW.

I highly doubt it. Some games die out simply because of
    a. poor grapihcs
    b. poor engine
    c. poor community
    d. poor replay value
Rome has none of those things, and even with a R2TW it'd still be played, just think of M2TW and MTW.
I thought about writing something clever, but then I remembered I'm not clever enough.
