Default How to increase size of battles?

    Hi there,

When i try to increase unit size from the standard 240 or whatever it is, to twice as much for bigger battles, nothing seems to happen. The unit size stays stays at 240. Anyone know what to do? I want to try and have 6000-8000 on each side for more realistic battles..

The Hardcode limit for units is 240 men plus 3 officers.

So the absolute limit is 243 or 244 if a general is in that unit.

Are those players screenshots. If there screenshots from the developers of the Game then YEa they could do w/e they want. But if there players screenshots maybe there pulling your chain a little.

Maybe those screens have like 2 to 3 armies working together and it looks like one army

I seem to remember Jingle_bombs mentioning somewhere that you could increase unit size to 400+ - maybe he'd know?

Someone posted an AAR saying he had upped the unit size to 500 just by changing the number in preferences.txt

I tried this myself and it didn't do anything. Has anyone been able to get the units larger than 240?

No exactly. The numbers may be different in the menu but when you go to the battle the numbers are the same. On whatever setting you have, normal, huge etc

Guys, the limit is hardcoded....240, plus 3 officers total (including General, who if present will replace an officer).
This is because the largest setting allowed in EDU.txt is '60', and the preferrences setting x4. If you changed it to '61', the game would instantly CTD.

see, I can't see WHY they locked down THAT KIND OF THING, same with the number of provinces or pop levels for cities - i mean, having hard-coded stuff is necessary to stop people pinching your code - but seriously, why even bother to put any limit at all on that sort of thing...? it's not making a difference to the security of the game either way, and it's just annoying for the player.

as an alternative to larger units, you can still have more men on the battlefield.
if you go to the preference file and change "UNLIMITED MEN" TO "FALSE" and then when a battle takes plan during your campaign that involves more than 2 armies, check the box for pc control for your reinforcements and you'll go into battle with thousands of men...it does sloow down the frame rate to a crawl though!
