Problem is players like myself have learned that RS just won't work online.
So I don't think it's possible to play RS online

I desperately hope RS2 will be better with the whole online compatibility thing.
Once you've experienced what it's like actually fighting a human opponent who intelligently reacts to your tactics, you'll really enjoy the game twice as much and spit upon the A.I. in the game forthe dumb junk it does.
I will definitely try to start up a group here when RS2 is out so fans can face off online![]()

I've been playing RTR VII TIC on-line for a short while. In order to play the install has to be exactly the same - I think the only modification allowed is to preferences.txt. If any of the other files have been modified then you won't be able to play games that are being hosted.
I have a version of the game in it's own folder just for MP - it's a vanilla install (no changes apart from preferences.txt).
There have been problems using gamespy for different players. What's happened is that people are installing Hamachi. Someone set up a 'network' a while ago an that is being used for RTRMP - this could be set up by someone for RSMP. Once you're running Hamachi launch the RS game and join a LAN battle!
I just checked and there is already such a network. I've created a RSMP2 with a password of rsmp2.
After you've installed Hamachi and logged into the network you will only see people that are on that network - not the usual mess that's on MP in gamespy.
Hamachi can be downloaded here: https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/vpn.asp
Edited: I think the following is the way to get a 'clean install'
1) base install: clean RTW 1.5 RTW BI 1.6
2) install RS 1.5a (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showp...86&postcount=1)
During the 1.5a install select 1 turn recruitment and region borders visible.
I think that's the set. Once that's done we can try some MP battles.

Brusilov, myself and Marcus Tullius tried doing fresh installs before, and tried both 1.5 and 1.6, and we could get no further than the gamespy room. I do not know if we tried Hamichi or not.
I have Hamachi, and at least for EB 1.1 it works fine. If you, or anyone else wants to try playing RS on Hamachi, let me know when you'll be on and I will try to plan for it![]()
I may have an idea, and I never thought of it before. The installer overwrites files in the default directory, but the creation dates of the files are whatever date/time you installed RS, so it will obviously vary from install to install.

Yes, but the weird thing is that it is not a problem when playing RTR TIC on-line.
At the start of the week I had problems getting a compatible game. I uninstalled and then installed 'clean' apart from 'preferences.txt' changes and then had no problems with compatibility with someone who installed a while ago.
I was told that with the TIC install it comes with it's own map.rwm file. So, there is no need to launch a game to create it and then share it (which I did).
I've posted a question on the RTR Dev forums to seek an answer to the secret! I've also sent a PM to Lestat who set up a specific MP EXE for TIC 1.0 which worked OK (with gamespy).
Stay tuned......

I gradded this Himachi, logged into the server RSMP2 pw:rsmp2 (apparently logon & pw is case sensitive). Selected LAN game, nobody in there.
If someone wants to do this, Add my X-Fire
Enuff32
I'll be in RS1.5a
Build time 0 turns, No borders
Roma Surrectum *not Surrectum w BI*
Figured I would throw the specifics in there, They can make a difference.

Yeah... Oli and I tried this not long ago, and Even with a pair of clean installs we kept getting a garbled error message with the word 'mod' smattered around in it a number of times, which has led me to believe that the problem is that RS is not a -mod switcher. correct me if I'm wrong, but all the other mods playable online (IBFD, RTR IC, EB etc) are all modswitchers, right?
RTR TIC is (a mod switch version). That may be a red herring, though. If the files are the same MP should be possible.
I don't think it's a matter of when it was installed as if this was the case no-one could play.
I think it both players start with a clean install then that's a starting point. That means that the installed options need to be agreed to and then followed - not someone then using different options (as this changes some settings)......
I've sent a PM to Lestat and raised a question on the RTR Dev forum - it's just a matter of time (hopefully). I can be a persistant b*stard.

It'll be awesome if you get it working. I know IBFD online is immense fun. The thrill you get from playing another intelligent human is quite unique.
Yes defeating a Human Player is something amazing
