Who has read Source Code by William Gibson?

    Would you recommend the novel?

I've never heard of this novel and it's not listed on his website as being one of his books. Are you sure it's by Gibson?

    I see.

I realize the novel's original title is Spook Country.

I have seen last night an interview on 3sat a german speaking station. The interview was simultaneous translated but I gave obviousely not enough attention and eyed to subtitle. Therefore: Quellkode (lit. Source Code), Spook Country.

    I rephrase then the question:

Would you recommend the novel Spook Country?

Absolutely. I read it a few months ago and it's excellent. Not exactly what you'd want if you were after a rip-roaring, fast-paced thriller, but it's beautifully written. His eye for defining detail and his ability to capture the mood and feel of "right now" is amazing.

I really like his newer, post-cyberpunk non-scifi stuff. All Tomorrow's Parties and Spook Country are his best work in years, and that's coming from a Gibson fan who'se been reading his stuff since the early Nineties.

The fact that he no longer has to set his books in the future to be able to write the kind of stuff he's always written shows how much reality has caught up with the kind of science fiction he was writing 20 years ago.

    Thank you,

I will then have a closer look into it.

He was asked in the interview that was aired last night, why he uses "brands" in his novels and answered, "branding" was one of the activities that characterises our situaton, he played with it for reasons of literary naturalism, therefore.

I haven't read many novels written by americans for quite a while. The potential of irony this writer shows, has caught my interest now.

I just read Spook Country recently. It took me a little bit to get into the novel. But once I did I had a hard time putting it down. Very well down if you ask me.

And as ThiudareiksGunthigg said...his new post cyberpunk books are pretty darn good.

    Thanks!

Looks interesting, but it has some very mixed reviews on amazon (but then Neuromancer itself has plenty of bad reviews too because of the dense prose)

I'll probably check out the other Sprawl books first and might return to this later.

Well, the keen part of Spook Country is Gibson vivid and amazing scenes he paints with his prose. You get the feel that you are there. You can feel the scene. I was very impressed with the novel. A must read, if you ask me.
