Default Ubuntu 8.04 and Medieval II: Total War Guide

Well, I managed to get it working, and I thought you guys might like to know how. It was actually really painless.

    Step One:
you need to get the proprietary graphics driver working. That's the hardest part. It's extremely easy if you have an Nvidia graphics card. Go to Restricted Drivers, enable it. It'll download and automatically install for you. Reboot and voila. Make sure it says "In use" and there is a green check mark.

If you have an ATI graphics card in the 2xxx series, it may be more difficult. But still doable. I'm running an ATI x2900 PRO and it works fine. You simply have to download the 32 bit library for it, which you can find online. Then follow the same steps as above, and enable the restricted driver.

Step Two: Install the most recent version of Wine. (Windows Emulator). If you don't know how to do it, open up the console, and type:
    wget -q http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/387EE263.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -

    then do:sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/...t.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list

or you can simply find it on the Add/Remove Programs list.

Pop in Medieval II CD, run the exe using Wine. Poof. Should install no problem. Try basic settings at first, then crank them up slowly to make sure you don't have any issues.

    Enjoy!

If you have more experience with it, want to add some comments or questions, lemme know. Thanks!

Oh, and if you want Ubuntu... www.ubuntu.com

It's FREE! (To those who have no idea what it is, it's an operating system that replaces XP or Vista)

Does this work for Med 2:TW with all the Patches?
As well as Kingdoms Retail Version with Patch?

What about Mods as well? Will they install without a hitch?

I'm new to Ubuntu, i'm trying it out now, I've installed the latest version of Wine.

I'm having a Nightmare installing this.

I've enabled the restrictive Driver.. I'm almost certain?

Wines installed in my application section.

Put Disc 1 of Med 2 in the Disc Drive, managed to figure out to 'open with Wine' and I got the Installation Instructions, then it asked for Disc 2 and I had problems, it wouldn't recognize it.
Had to 'Browse' Change the Disk Location to help find the files to set up Disc 2, it found them and continued installing, I then installed Direct X and it says I've completed installation.

BUT I click launch Med 2 from the Wine Application and nothing happens.
    The Game wont Start.
    What have I done wrong?
Bare in mind i'm new to Ubuntu; Any help would be dandy.

You're braver than me. I would love Linux when they figure this out. Did you ask the gurus in the Basement where the thechies hang out?
