    Default a couple of questions...

ok so i just got this game last week (HOI2 anthology), and it's really got me hooked, playing right now as germany though on weakling/coward (need some time to getting used to).

however, i have a couple of gripes that i don't understand much. so here they are:

-when you make a proposal, does the ai immediately make a decision? cuz they always do, and i thought that in paradox games they take some time before answering to simulate choices being thought over.

-almost everything i do is a 0 chance. highest i got was 22% chance, i believe. how come it's always a 0 chance whenever i invite someone to my alliance, or even offer a non-aggression pact? even when trading, it's impossible. i had to cheat and re-load the game as italy just to get them to join my alliance as it's frustrating that they dont want to join when historically they did.

-this one really bothers me. never has a nation accepted to be my puppet. yes, i know you can do it by annexing them, then liberating their nation. but what i mean is when you "sue for peace" (not just make puppet option, but any option i do, even beg for peace, they reject it outright). yes, i've read the manual and i've conquered all they key provinces and capitals of the nations i wanted to subjugate, but they still resist. heck, i had a warscore of 100% vs the USSR and make puppet was only 70%, but they still rejected my proposal very bluntly.

-sometimes, on the main map, the number of divisions is displayed incorrectly. sometimes it says 5, but when i click or hover over it, it's only 4 divs.

-when naval bases and airfields are colored blue, that means they have vessels within it, right? then how come on some of my provinces they're highlighted blue but when i click they dont have any air or sea units inside them?

-i declared war on greece, which is right beside romania, hungary, and italy, all allies (as i said, either because i cheated like said above method, or they wanted to join. but whenever i invite them to join, they reject), but they haven't attacked greece or anything. is it really like that?

    -how do you use rockets?

-does HOI2 really suffer from bad grammar? (the messages i receive, for example: The USSR recently had the LEND-LEASE AGREEMENT FROM THE USE happened to us recently. or something like that)

is there any patch that fixes these? or is it just me?

i know, i know. i should go and ask at paradox's public forums, but i wanted to see if anyone could help me here since i'm too lazy to make a new account lol. thanks for the time

    In HOI2 they choose instantly.

Never played as Germany. But in general, much of the Axis alliances are triggered by events. It shouldn't be necessary to manually ask the historical axis nations. If you want an unhistorical nation to join your alliance, you obviously need good relations with them. Some nations are almost impossible to gain an alliance with, you could try to staging a coup to increase your chances, but the chances of the coup suceeding is small.

Just annex and puppet. It has exactly the same effect with no downsides.

Your decryption needs to be higher than the enemy's encryption, otherwise the number of divisions will display incorrectly. You can research cryptography in the "industrial" tab.

This means your allies have air/sea units there.

The Greek provinces adjacent to the Bulgarian and Italian provinces (occupied Albania) all have level 5 fortification. Your allies probably don't have enough troops to break trough the fortifications.

Research "Flying Bomb" in the "industrial" tab. Eventually it will open up to you in the "Secret weapons" tab. Using the rockets are just like using a plane, you right click the province you want to bomb and choose strategic strike/installation strike/etc.

Patches are available on paradoxplaza.com, no idea if they fix grammar.

WOW thanks for the really informative reply. didn't think anyone would really reply like this. anyway...

-yeah i always check relations with nations before i do anything, but i can't get them to agree with anything, even my allies! yeah i know that an event can trigger alliances, but say, you want to have an alliance with a nation, plus you really got a high standing with it, it always still rejects me for some reason. btw, it's already mid-1943, and i can't get japan to join my alliance. :\

-well i know about annexing and puppeting, that's what i always do. but the point is, everytime i demand something (keep in mind i have a high warscore, and i've captured almost every key province), they reject outright, like when i sue for peace, make them a puppet, demand provinces.

-WOW i never knew about that decrpytion/encryption, thanks for the tip. i meant, though, my own divisons. sometimes it shows differently :\

one more thing, what does the influence nation do? cuz everytime i do it, and everytime some other nation does it to me too, it's always "barely influenced." no, i'm not talking about countries such as the usa since obviously this would happen if you're germany, but i tried it against japan, italy... nothing.

    thanks!

    edit: patch is save-game compatible?

Yeah, definetely update to latest version before doing anything. Also check out the modifications at Paradox forum. At least get the GIP (graphics improvement project).

Japan should Join the axis when you have near max relations (200). Italy will surely join when you reach Paris as the Germans. (Of course, you might have made some unhistorical choices in the events, such as the tripartite pact (?))

Also, any peace deal besides annexation is pretty much useless in HoI. As germany you won't have to use anything else. Puppets you may release after you have occupied countries, and through some events (like Vichy). Some peace deals, like bitter peace, are events.

And "influence nation" improves you relations with the target country.

As a little hint, don't ignore the intelligence part. Try to have 10 spies in your own country and in the other big powers so you can see the size of their armies, steal blueprints and do lots of other good stuff.

well, i do try to do some counter-intelligence myself, but it's always an extremely low chance that i successfully send spies into other countries. in fact, i dont think i have ever successfully sent a spy to another country, and that just worsens my relations with them.

so even if i "barely influence" a nation, relations still improve? and do you usually get barely influenced too? cuz i ALWAYS do

'Cmon, normal-normal aint that hard. And U can still become a mighty naval power with 6-8 or more carriers...

-when you make a proposal, does the ai immediately make a decision? cuz they always do, and i thought that in paradox games they take some time before answering to simulate choices being thought over.

That's right, if you see <40%, it's probably not worth attempting.

Spy actions are always relatively low-probability, and alliance events are somewhat scripted. When trading, try to balance out the proposal - for some reason you can get pretty much other resources by trading away supplies.

    * Chances of joining your alliance are depending (normally) upon your belligerance (the higher, the less chance, but luckily Adolf can decrease that score if you're at peace; at war it's the other way around) and your relations (you can increase that, it will cost a lot initially, but gets cheaper if you embrace Hawk politics and like to intervene, and you can get money by producing consumer goods).

You can usually ally quite well with dictatorships (paternalists, fascists...), but not with isolationist republics. Some alliances seem harder to get, like aligning with Argentina. Some are possible with some effort until some historical event comes and messes things up (I've allied as Germany with Turkey, its possible while Ataturk is alive, but the land border with Soviets tends to create tensions and may lead to war sooner than you'd like it). Hungary, Romania etc are much more likely to be ally-able by 39-40.
Members of other alliances, including small ones (Latvia & Estonia) can be allied only with help of some events that enable it in some way. (Japan & Manchkuko & what else can be persuaded to join in)

Many alliances are made possibe by events and there are lots of possibilities! U can make pact with Soviets, but U can also get (or offer, as Soviets) a full unholy alliance proposal: Soviet Union wil abandon Komintern and then can be brought into the Axis! Alliance with Japan is possible, I guess, after signing the Anti-Komintern pact. Italy is possible after some pact or (most likely) after you break the back of France. Nationalist Spain can become ally if you declare war on Republicans and only before the war is over and Spain united. Course of USA can be altered by different election outcomes etc. Allies - as far as I know - will stand till the bitter end, but alliance with Vichy is plausible.

Some of the strangest things happen if war breaks out like avalanche before historical times (somehow in Armageddon 1.2 France tends to declare war in June 38 - either my wars in Spain or vs Luxemburg or alliance with Turkey, and Anschluss together are to blame. France gets owned TOO easily, but the global war is on). Sometimes Soviets have declared war on me in the middle of chaos, but after that i could be ally of almost any Easten European country - Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia....

No peace with the evil fascists, comrade! The big players are coded to be stubborn and inflexible in these attitudes.

-sometimes, on the main map, the number of divisions is displayed incorrectly. sometimes it says 5, but when i click or hover over it, it's only 4 divs.

For enemies, it is an approximate number whose accuracy is based on the quality of your available intelligence (not just spies but also encription/decription)
For your troops it might mean you have one group of 4 and another lone division. Or some air groups present.

-i declared war on greece, which is right beside romania, hungary, and italy, all allies (as i said, either because i cheated like said above method, or they wanted to join. but whenever i invite them to join, they reject), but they haven't attacked greece or anything. is it really like that?

Dunno, might be because of defensive AI or lack of any serious military strenght, or they just need some time to realize they're in war now...

    -how do you use rockets?

U research them, than build them, and - if memory serves me well enough - deploy them & use strategic attack mission within the available range. Or move them closer to your enemy.

-does HOI2 really suffer from bad grammar? (the messages i receive, for example: The USSR recently had the LEND-LEASE AGREEMENT FROM THE USE happened to us recently. or something like that)

Hmm, haven't noticed it before. Still, HoI2 is a big game with countless text lines.

CA should take some of the best ideas from Paradox games and Total War would be unrivalled by any other strategy game (well, except Paradox and some other niche markets).

No matter what some stoners say, as long as there are humans around, there will be conflict and war. Total War. /myself/

ok, thanks redleader for clearing up a lot of things. i guess my only gripe right now is how i've never been able to do more than "barely influence" a nation even if it's an ally...

and is the patch and mods save-game compatible?

edit: btw spart, i can't find the GIP. paradoxplaza forum right? no find

Quess you'll have to try.. GIP is save game compatible, mods that make bigger changes aren't. Some patches might be, and you might find out by reading the patch/mod readme.
