roman are too good

so im playing as syracuse and whenever I attack the romans they own the hell out of me. im not terrible at this game, the last battle i had 1000 more men but once i get close with my hoplites they all throw pilas and kill just about everybody. ive saved right before this battle and just cannot win! why are the romans so good?

I'm playing a Syracuse campaign too. I've found that if you have two units of Peltasts in loose formation infront of your Hoplites, they can catch the pila, leaving your Hoplites to smash the legions

I was playing Macedon in that campaign. You are correct in that the Barbarian Archers (they look like Syrian Archers to me) are better than the Macedon ones.

It's sometimes a matter of having access to refresh the mercenaries while it's easier to retrain a depleted Macedon unit up to strength.

I don't tend to use elephants in my campaigns. Although I have done so as Carthage in my current campaign - my 'elite' armies each has one armoured elephant unit. I have two of these armies in total and they are currently operating on the Greek mainland.

Another Macedon player, may i ask you how your armies are composed? If you have a set organisation that is? And have you found that if you have a unit pinned with Pikemen if you walk your cavalry into the rear of them instead of charging it completely decimates the unit?

well after doing the roman and greek campaigns id set it to very hard.
ive been taking this game slow so the other nations can get strong, instead of me just starting off taking lots of land. ive changed some strategies towards the romans and starting using more pelasts and archers, as well as less standard hoplites, and ive claimed 2 cities on the southern tip of italy. keeping my soldiers in boats instead of cities.

I had the same issue. I'm playing as Syracuse and I went to war with Rome in an attempt to keep my ally Epeiros alive. Rome exploded into expansion super fast. And those most disgusting thing to me is that Gaul NEVER attacked them when they spread like a disease into the East. Meanwhile I would have super veteran armies fighting the Romans in the south of Italy and while I'd win the damn battles they were pretty much Phyrric victories because I would win but my army would be decimated. So I'd return to Sicily to retrain my armies and while I did this Epeiros was getting slapped around by the Romans. It made me very mad at the end of each battle seeing all my hoplites taking far more casualties than inflicting them and that essentially I only won each battle because I'm a savage cavalry commander =D and my cavalry is what saved the day.

As was posted in the dev forum when discussing balance issues for RS2 and how you can beat the Romans, why would you march up to the Romans with a phalanx army? That literally throws away your major advantage.

right. they're underpowered if you ask me - they OUGHT to be able to hold their own without major casualties against most similarly equipped opponents (i.e. swordsmen and the like) but they still get crushed... *sigh* and i don't know why you're complaining - for a pre-marian legion, phalanx armies are a nightmare!
