Default How do you make Military Access easier?

Arguably one of the toughest off the rack diplomatic concerns to secure, is obtaining military access with even a long time ally. The knock on effects of not having this in place with an ally can be debilitating indeed. How does a novice go about making this easier to obtain?

Some gold makes it alot easier. Although I never had to pay for it. I for some reason was always able to get that. Maybe a lot depends on your relations with everybody.

I can usually get it. It just depends on how you go about asking for it and how big of a stick you carry.

I usually insure that I get ONLY what I need out of each offer. For instance, I go for trade rights, and just offer even if it's generous. If i'm trustworthy and the diplomat is good, then I ask for map exchange, or even just gift map info.
Then if it's lucrative go for alliance. If they are pleased with the proceeding so far, then go for access. If they are not wait a few turns so that you have more map to offer.

The real key is to have good relations with the target, longstanding trust with everyone else, and a massively powerful military without alliances. Works for me. Usually I can just give 'em a huge pile of cash, too. That never hurts.

May sound a little noobish but: What does Military Access affect? Is it the same as becoming a vassal?

It just allows you to enter the faction's land without any negetive affects, so basically allowing you to roam around their land without them starting to hate you.

No..if you obtain military access from some faction, it means you can move your armies through their territory without them holding a grudge at you! It won't be considered as an act of hostility!

Vassal state is under patronage of state that imposed vassalage upon it! Vassal state loses it's sovereignty and pays tribute to "master" state, but gains protection in exchange!

Although I didn't notice I had to pay any extra cash when being Poland's vassal! :hmmm:

You sometimes have that option when you initiate diplomacy! I think you have to be more powerful then the faction you are requesting to be your vassal..

As has been said you can move military around their lands without bad effect, you can also move through their zone of control (the red tiles surrounding foreign armies and cities/castles) without getting stopped. Very useful.

I find that giving cash is the easiest way to get it.

I thought you could only make a faction your vassal if you were at war with them and give them a good beating? :hmmm:

If your ally is your neighbour and you are both fighting an enemy on your borders, it's much easier to get I realised.

My recent campaign with Venice, Hungary was my ally. The nasty Greeks attacked both of us, and so I could coordinate attacks, I just swapped military access for military access, and they agreed with generous.

    Yes, i noticed this too.

Very hard to get MA if its senseless for the AI, for example, there is no common enemy. If there is, the ally will agree the request for MA much easily.

I dont tend to go for it myself, if i have an isolated landlocked province i usually offer it to a neighbouring faction in exchange for a province closer to home.

Also, if you have a good relationship with the faction, they wont attack you outright for being in their lands and iff need be a quick gift of a couple of florins usually keeps everyone happy
