Default Diplomatic Nightmare-i'm officially a rogue state

    as milan vh/vh
territories i currently hold include marseille, milan, bern, innsbruck, florence, bologna, sicily and corsica and sardinia and rhodes and crete.
all my allies have turned thir back on me ever since the papacy declared war on me (ironic consideirng i personally funded and gave the papcy territory such as venice and zagreb to raise armies).
all my armies have been recalled from the frontbut it'll take at least 2 turns b4 they arrive.
my faction heir has taken personal control of my sole army in italy and beaten off some besiging armies
    it's gonna be tough!!!
i'm facing a war on all fronts-within and without
i'm at war with france, HRE and venice and norman sicily and nopw the papacy!!
i've pissed everyone off and now i have to defend myself!!
and on top of that, my $$$ situation's crappy, i'm going to go bankrupt in about 2 turns (my economy's been running red for the last 5 turns) and if i pull men fropm the garrisoned cities, i'll face blue faced revolts!!
    these are dark times.

    advice pls

Make peace with the papacy at ALL costs. Even if you have to give up a city, then assassinate the pope.

Then you should be okay for a bit.

If you don't make peace with the papacy, it will get a lot worse.

    LOL
<to guard>" guard, take this advisor and have him impaled for treachery"
    <guard takes dr_guerra away>
" anyone who advoates surrender must DIE. Milan bends at the knee to no man. The Duke has spoken!!"

    my plan is this:
drive the papacy from italy (and the sicilians too). with italy mine as my main base of operations i can make enoguh $$$ from trade and income to take spain.
later when i take over the levant, i intend to give this piece of land to the real estate, just in time for the mongols to show up and get weakened by a strong papal presence in the levant....

    Out of curiosity --

How far into the campaign are you?

Did you simply grab territory from each faction and move on or did you resolve one conflict before starting another?

Have you been churching and priesting?

The reason for asking is to get some hint how you got into your hole. Perhaps backing out the way you came in will fix the problem.

well i went fast expansion sacking and pillaging my way through the mediterranean (currently it's about 1140 or so) which was good at first, i did an alexander and hired a lot of mercs, but to stay on the pope's good side i gave him venice (ref. to my AAR in the AAR section) and ragusa and zagreb.
a fat lot of good it did (see, once i abandoned those settlements, i destryoyed every building for the $$) and moved on.
i suppose because my global reputation is deceitful and that might exaplain why it's so hard to to get someting agreed from in respect to all the other euro factions.
all my allies have abandoned me with the exception of portugaL...and the powerful byzantines who've steamed across turkey refuse my offers of an alliance.

Good news tho: i retook venice and scored some major $$ which should stop my armies from deserting and my best General took down rome and killed the pope which gives me a bargaining chip i suppose....then and again i could jsut use the whole peninsula to get rich and squash anyone....
the pussy sicilians dont dare emerge from naples...they're jsut busy tying to defed themselves from milanese incursions.

    @darkyellowfire

on VH it's tough. I guess the only choice you have is to kill them all.

btw, I think the Pope in vinilla is bugged or something, if they stay in Rome the only thing they might do is to take Florence if it's rebel. but once they get another city, they'll go nuts and start getting aggresive

heh, see that's what i want
the papal guard has like insane morale-comparable to aztecs- and when u take a city with them u have to take them on both sides with heavy infantry (in my rome siege, the papal guard was more than a match for my DFK on te walls)
my intention is to 'resettle' the papacy in the levant so they can offer up a mongol/timurid buffer and hopefully weaken the gyppos and turks

Not my style, but sounds interesting! Yes, you are right, you are a rogue state. Once you make a cinder out of Europe, nobady will trust you.

I had the same problem when i played as england. I had moved to more of the position milan starts out with, and lost the land behind me. Then i didn't stop war with fance when the pope told me(cause they kept freakin attacking me) and i was discommunicated. Then i though, screw it, and took rome, venice, and florence from the papacy, which of corse made eveone else mad. I got sqashed in the end

ah a migration game; they're always fun and milan does occupy one of the best positions on the map.
if u can take Bern (u dont necessarily have to take innsbruck) ur pretty much set against france and the HRE.
the only prob. i find with being a rogue state is that ur economy takes a hit cuz of the cessation of trade-and milan is a country heavily dependant on trade.
i found my economy quickly becoming a roman style -plunder economy which is onyl good for the short term (but man oh man is it lucrative).
venice alone netted me ~25000 florins

yup, money deffinitly became a problem for me, i eventually got the moors(who had most of the iberian peninsula) to be allies with me, and trade, but it was too little, too late.

here's a dumb question, does going to war with the pope = auto excommunication? it would seem that way but in my first game i notice that Sciliy going to war with the Pope seem to have remained communicated for some strange reason.

if your not excommed... get him to call a Crusade or something and gain some pope points that way.

if your a Catholic nation, going to war with every other catholic is REALLY tough, unlike the Muslim / Orthodoxs... you'll get hit from ALL sides. not just one.

good q; i assume so since according to the pope's tab, i have 0 crosses and i have a lot of rioting settlements.

what's interestying tho is if ur still at war with the papacy and u kill the pope, the successive pope will still be at war with u and will still hate your guts (even if u voted for him).
best to settle for peace...then assassinate the pope
