Default Your favourite Quotes and Philosophy

    Greets.

Perhaps some like quotes of sages, or have already created their owns, which are worthy to share.

I prefer stoic philosophy quotes like:

"When we are invited to a banquet, we take what is set before us; and were one to call upon his host to set fish upon the table or sweet things, he would be deemed absurd. Yet in a word, we ask the Gods for what they do not give; and that, although they have given us so many things!"
    By Epictetus

"The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts: therefore, guard accordingly, and take care that you entertain no notions unsuitable to virtue and reasonable nature. "
    By Marcus Aurelius

But these stoics have their very sad statements like:

"The art of living is more like wrestling than dancing."
    By Marcus Aurelius

"Thou art but a poor soul laden with a lifeless body."
    By Epictetus

It seems these stoics really tried to live with as little luxury as possible, accepting all tragedy natural. And really in ancient times, human life wasnt too valuable.

"Captain, my religious belief teaches me to feel as safe in battle as in bed. God has fixed the time for my death. I do not concern myself about that, but to be always ready, no matter when it may overtake me." He added, after a pause, looking me full in the face: "That is the way all men should live, and then all would be equally brave" -General Thomas J. Jackson 1861

Those who live by the sword, die by the sword

Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.
    --Matthew 26:52
This is a warning to all those who believe they can achieve all their aims with violence, ironically appropriate for admirers of ancient leaders and warfare such as ourselves.

"Romans not only easily conquered those who fought by cutting, but mocked them too. For the cut, even delivered with force, frequently does not kill, when the vital parts are protected by equipment and bone. On the contrary, a point brought to bear is fatal at two inches; for it is necessary that whatever vital parts it penetrates, it is immersed. Next, when a cut is delivered, the right arm and flank are exposed. However, the point is delivered with the cover of the body and wounds the enemy before he sees it."

I thought they are called "chick flicks" for a reason?

    Anyway:

Idque apud imperitos humanitas uocabatur, cum pars seruitutis esset.
"The naive called this "civilization", while it was in truth part of their slavery" (on the introduction of Roman culture among the Britons, free translation)

    Tacitus, Agricola 21.

Tacitus is really full of memorable quotes, this is just one of my favourites.

Einstein - maybe he had also seen Mad Max films?

Shakespeare - it comes from: All the world's a stage (from As You Like It)
    "All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players..."

Here we can see, that Eastern and Western philosophy are sometiems diametrically opposed to each other. As the Tao Te Ching (43)(by Lao-tzu) says:

"The softest thing in the world dashes against and overcomes the
hardest; that which has no (substantial) existence enters where there
is no crevice. I know hereby what advantage belongs to doing nothing
    (with a purpose).

There are few in the world who attain to the teaching without
words, and the advantage arising from non-action."

So it is "chick flicks"? Now I understand, thanx, Tiberius.

Tacitus- So it describes a historic process: the enslaving of barbarians into Rome.
So did he write memoirs of war, like Julius Caesar? Did his quotes rather comment history in overall, or they resemble other sages' "general" quotes? (I dont know how to categorize them)

I can't think of a decent quote by a known philosopher, but Kurt Cobain's "It's better to burn out than fade away." shows exactly how I'd like to live my life.
