How do you know its in your unit and is there a way to get it back once you've lost it?
Thanks
the first legion cohort has the eagle (campaign map it shows up on the top left of their unit card, and in battle map there is a guy holding the eagle).
And im not sure how you get it back, I took the settlement it said they took my lost eagle to, but nothing happened.

I think the unit description will have 'eagle inspires nearby troops'.
Although I've never personally lost and Eagle I've acquired a few in my time. There is usually a message after the battle that contains the name of the settlement that the Eagle has been taken to along with a warning that the Romans will do their upmost to retrieve it.
I would presume that a similar message will be given to the Romans.
The way to get the Eagle back is to take the settlement where the Eagle has been taken.
I know there are various traits for generals that have lost Eagles but also ones that are gained when the Eagle is regained.
The following are the traits in the export_desc_character_traits.txt file;

@spartan_johnny - how long did it take you to regain the Eagle?

well it took about 4-5 turns.
As you say it affects traits it could be just simply I didn't notice a new trait.

You know I've had armies comprised of no legionaries that have a first Cohort or an eagle. In some cases it's been a mostly mercenary army with a few hastati and Principe thrown in. Then I've auto-resolved battles and lost because of the ridiculous way auto-resolve works, and I get the lost eagle message. This is makes me very angry seeing as how I had no legionary Eagle in the battle which was made up of predominanitely Gallic spearman mercenaries or such. This happens often with my armies that have no Eagle, makes me mad.
i think if a Roman unit has the "eagle" above it, i.e. it's inspiring to other units, (even if it doesn't show), and the army it's in is wiped out (along with it), then maybe possibly the game thinks this is a proper eagle? i don't know, really...

Before Rome gets the reforms, you can get an eagle by kiling their armies, even though they have hastati, principies, and triarii. They don't have eagles, but somehow you can capture them.![]()
Other units aside from the first cohorts of imperial legions have the command attribute, and rtw will likely consider these "eagle" if a unit with the command attribute is killed in battle.

If some barbarians for example have command will you be getting 'lost eagle' messages?Because if advisor is turned on you get 'first cohort' message even if you are playing as greeks for example
Yes. As previously stated rtw considers any unit with the command attribute to have an eagle.

Maybe that message can be renamed, so we can have these events as greeks, barbarians, and others....
Squid explained the technical side of things, but from a historical perspective even pre-Caesarian legions had eagles. Marius started the idea of a legion carrying an eagle as its symbol. Prior to him the legions carried a variety of animal standards, the eagle being just one of many. So I guess the Polybian legion could technically lose an eagle in battle. An entirely merc army should not lose an eagle in battle, but even one cohort of Romans could be interpreted by the computer as having an eagle.
So what do you think? Is it possible to rename 'lost eagle' event to something else for non-Roman factions?
No, there's only one event text for each event.
