    Icon4 Mongol Unit Recruitment problem - Teutonic Campaign

    I've been having some difficulties in my attempts to mod the Teutonic campaign. My changes to the descr_strat file have thus far been successful, I added in Norway/Mongolia, fixed some initial problems (like Mongolian family members having no traits) and up to know things have been good. I've hit a snag recently however.

    I've been trying to make the Mongolian Dismounted Heavy and Light Lancers recruitable from the Fortress/Citadel level Castles. I've modified the proper files (or so I thought) but the units don't show up in the list of recruits when I check the building browser. The list still shows the original 6 units, either my changes have had no effect or I changed the wrong files (somehow). The only editing I engaged in was placing the proper entries in export_descr_buildings in the Teutonic folder. I can't think of anything else I'd really have to change so it'd be helpful if you guys could help me out.

    The units are already available in the custom battle section, I just want to make them recruitable in the campaign as well. Whatever I've done hasn't made the game crash but it hasn't done anything positive either, got any ideas? And FYI I'm not doing the file_first thing, I just backed up the original text files and I'm editing the others directly.

    well you need the file first thing for it to work
    incase you don't know how to do it I've seen 3 ways to do it
    1. create a batch file that says medieval2.exe --io.file_first
    2. add --io.file_first to your medieval 2 short cut
    3. or add the lines
    [io]
    file_first = true
    to your medieval2.preferences.cfg

    so am I to understand changes to descr_strat go through regardless, but changes to unit recruitment MUST have the "file first" thing? Just trying to make sure I understand what's happening here.

    Okay my situation has been partly resolved, the game boots and the changes I've made to the Mongolian Faction are showing up. The new problem is Norway's units are not showing up even after I've edited the buildings file AND the game isn't crashing either. Specifically the generic units like spear militia, crossbow militia, and peasant archers aren't showing up. I'm afraid I'm not enough of a mod-wiz to know what the issue is, and all I'm really trying to do is just get Norway/Mongolia to be playable. If anyone knows what the hangup is, let me know.

    ok well just to clarify the file_first thing you need it for the game to run any unpacked files that were edited and perhaps you should look through export_descr_buildings to see if you didn't accidentally delete the entries where it says these guys should be recruitable. and if you can't find them add them yourself

    I got everything unpacked, and I've edited my files properly, still Norwegian units don't show up properly, even when all the entries are seemingly correct. The game boots and about 40% of the new entries show up. Various units (as I mentioned in another thread), like the spear militia, crossbowmen and so forth remain unrecruitable. There is no rhyme or reason to it, and some changes which work are followed by some that don't. In fact, some units are available in early parts of a building branch, like castle upgrades, but then fall into a void at a later upgrade, despite the entries being correct. I have no explanation at the moment.

    so in the early stages of a barracks the units are recruitable but at the end when the building is fully upgraded they can no longer be recruited?

    Well let me give you some examples. In my city wall tree the only unit that is ever available for recruitment is Town Militia, this is despite the fact that I've made appropriate entries to allow Norway to recruit Town Militia, Spear Militia, and Crossbow Militia by the "Huge" wall level. None of the changes show up at any level of upgrade, the only unit that remains is Town Militia.

    In terms of Castles I end up with another problem, take the typical Viking Raider Unit, it shows up as it should moving up from Castle to Fortress, but once I reach Citadel level it is no longer available, even though according to the text file export_descr_buildings it is there and ready to go. This is in contrast to my editing of the Mongolian recruitment tree which went off without a hitch. I really don't know what's wrong, the entries in the unit and building files are as they should be.
