    Default Unit ideas for dwarves

Umm, I've posted this already to Dev Forum, but I'd like to hear everybody's opinion about these ideas of mine.

First worst and best dwarven unit.

Dwarven Miners: This is peasant unit of dwarves, simply armed with pickaxe.

Dwarven Lords: This unit is group of high-class dwarves who are general's bodyguard in battle fields. This unit could have these roman stylish shields but they should be grey, little smaller and thicker. As a weapon they could have axe with long haft that would be as long as dwarf who holds it.

The some special city units which you can recruit only from certain settlements.

Warriors of Khazad-dûm: Black armor and red clothes, black helmet, no shield, armed with axes or hammers which are as tall as dwarves who bear them.

    Place where to recruit: Khazad-dûm

Guards of High Pass: Black armor and green clothes, black helmet, big black shield, armed with short axes or short swords.

Place where to recruit: High Pass

Dragonslayers of Ered Mithrin: Black armor and purple clothes, black helmet, big black shield, armed with great axes.

Place where to recruit: Ered Mithrin (Grey Mountains)

Hammermen of Gundabad: Black armor and blue clothes, black helmet, no shield, armed with hammers which are as tall as dwarves who bear them.

Place where to recruit: Gundabad (Mount Gundabad)

Halberdmen of Ered Luin: Grey armor and green clothes, grey helmet, no shield, armed with halberds which are little taller than dwarves who bear them.

Place where to recruit: Ered Luin (Blue Mountains)

Battle Mattockmen of Iron Hills: Grey armor and red clothes, grey helmet, no shield, armed with two-handed sword (sword shouldn't be very tall, it should be massive; thick and wide).

Place where to recruit: Iron Hills

Axemen of Erebor: Grey armor and blue clothes, grey helmet, no shield, armed with axes which are as tall as dwarves who bear them.

Place where to recruit: Erebor (Lonely Mountain)

Then some units you can recruit from any dwarven settlements.

Dwarven Axemen, Dwarven Axethrowers, Dwarven Halberdmen, Dwarven Hammermen:

I was thinking that all these four units could have same armor, helmet and clothes. This outfit could be same sort of which
Gimli had. Red and brown leather and same kind of leather helmet. Axemen and hammermen could have medium size shields and quite small one-handed axes and hammers. Halberdmen could have halberds which are little taller than them but no shields. And finally axethrowers could have as weapons these about 10 inch/30 cm tall small axes like Gimli had in the Fellowship of the Ring and as a second weapon they could have small axes like axemen.

Please, tell me what you like about the names and looks I gave to these units. :original: And tell me do you like this "city dwarf" -idea of mine at all.

Dragons were Dwarfslayers not Dwarves Dragonslayers

... the Elven-wise, lords of the Eldar from beyond the furthest seas. They do not fear the Ringwraiths, for those who have dwelt in the Blessed Realm live at once in both worlds, and against both the Seen and the Unseen they have great power...

Well in Ered Mithrin dwarves fought quite long time against dragons and cold-drakes. I wouldn't be surprised if they had heavily armoured forces who were ment to kill dragons.

Very nice Varjon. Although just one thing

Hammermen of Gundabad: Black armor and blue clothes, black helmet, no shield, armed with hammers which are as tall as dwarves who bear them.

Place where to recruit: Gundabad (Mount Gundabad)
I always thought Gunabad was the capital of the goblins in the Misty Mts. Why would there be dwarves there?

Most of the "goblin" cities were dwarven once.Like Khazad-dum and Gundabad. So it will be interesting that when the dwarves capture a settlement which was theirs in the days of old they could recruit some special unit.Personally I don't agree with just one thing-the dwarves from the Iron Hills should fight with battle mattocks instead of swords. This was their fighting style during the Battle of Azanulbizar and the Battle of the Five Armies.
    Otherwise-very good job.

PS-I would recommend to make some Barding archers as mercs for the dwarves because they have very limited ranged units choice.

Well not even mercs. They should be regular units to recruit. Except weaker than there Dale Counterparts

I remember there being evidence somewhere of Dwarves using bows themselves. It makes a bit more sense tactically to use bows against dragons than throwing axes.

I think that these units should have closed helmets. Sort of like the Cuman Nobles from Stainless Steel. Like it was descriped in the Silmarillion:

''For the Naugrim withstood fire more hardily than either Elves or Men, and it was their custom moreover to wear great masks in battle hideous to look upon; and those stood them in good stead against the dragons. And but for them Glaurung and his brood would have withered all that was left of the Noldor. But the Naugrim made a circle about him when he assailed them, and even his mighty armour was not full proof against the blows of their great axes; and when in his rage Glaurung turned and struck down Azaghâl, Lord of Belegost, and crawled over him, with his last stroke Azaghâl drove a knife into his belly, and so wounded him that he fled the field, and the beasts of Angband in dismay followed after him. Then the Dwarves raised up the body of Azaghâl
and bore it away; and with slow steps they walked behind singing a dirge in deep voices, as it were a funeral pomp in their country, and gave no heed more to their foes; and none dared to stay them.''
    -From the Silmarillion,
Chapter 20: Of the Fifth Battle: Nirnaeth Arnoediad

Another thing is, as is said in the text, that these Dragonslayers would use ''great axes'' as well. I never heard of Dwarves using spears. Do you mean this unit to be a phalanx unit?

Found the relevant quotes in The Hobbit:

Thorin to Bard, during the parley (Chapter XV "The Gathering of the Clouds"): "'Begone now ere our arrows fly!'"

A couple paragraphs later: "Then Thorin seized a bow of horn and shot an arrow at the speaker. It smote into his shield and struck there quivering."

From the next chapter, describing Dain's army: "Each one of his folk was clad in a hauberk of steel mail that hung to his knees, and his legs were covered with hose of a fine and flexible metal mesh, the secret of whose making was possessed by Dain's people. . . . In battle they wielded heavy two-handed mattocks; but each of them also had a short broad sword at his side and a roundshield slung at his back. . . . Their caps were of iron and they were shod with iron, and their faces were grim."

As far as I know, that is the only detailed description of how an army of dwarves was outfitted.

From that, the weapons used by Gimli, the scene quoted by lustinianos above, and the sword Orcist, Dwarves used the following weapons:

    - Axes (melee), both 1H and 2H
    - Bows
    - Swords of the long and broad varieties, both 1H and 2H
    - Throwing Axes, but as a secondary weapon similar to the pila used by Roman infantry in RTW.
    - Mattocks, which are similar to pickaxes.
    - Shields

Aside from the Dwarven Phalanx unit in Battle for Middle Earth II, I don't know of any reference to a Dwarf using a pike or spear of any kind. It may be safe to stretch that list to include poleaxes as well since that and the mattock are similar.

Great. I think we can fairly sure say that though the Dwarves where able to use bows they where not as effective as Elvish Archers nor used the same sort of bows. So they would need different bows, I reckon that due to their length they would use quite small bows(imagine a Dwarf using a longbow) Also I think that the core of a Dwarf army would excist mostly out of axe-men, and that the missile units would be a small part of it seeing that the Dwarves are mostly an infantry faction. Not like the Gondorian/Elvish armies which where heavily supported by archers. Throwing axes should indeed be used as short-ranged missile weapons.

Dwarves should rule in close combat but with their stubby legs elven archers would pick them of b4 they could do too much damage.

    1) Dwarve rangers with bows and axes

    http://oz.games-workshop.com/storefr...002&orignav=16

    2) Vault Warden Team (near phalanx unit)

    http://oz.games-workshop.com/storefr...017&orignav=16

    3) Iron guard (should be recruited in non original dwarven settlements , if the team decided elves and dwarves shouldn't recruit full roasters in these settlements , like what LOTR mod for RTW done)

    http://oz.games-workshop.com/storefr...016&orignav=16

    4) Dwarf Ballista (dah XD) (dam if the RTW scorpion was in game already, it will be much easier to mod this XD)

    http://oz.games-workshop.com/storefr...018&orignav=16

    5) Balin's Guard (only recruit able when they take back Moria)

    http://oz.games-workshop.com/storefr...019&orignav=16

    6) Khazad Guard (High end unit as Varjon suggested in his post)

    http://oz.games-workshop.com/storefr...008&orignav=16

Thx + rep. That should help the team a lot. I think.... They could have the Dwarves done already and refuse to tell us.

I like the Dwarf Short bowmen! Also I hope the team stays true to the heavy bulky armor and of course really cool masks.

I completely agree. Not just because they are smaller then the other races but also because of their heavy armour and weapons. Somewhat like Dismounted Feudal Knights in MTW2, maybe even slower.
