Included are two models, a skin for each, gloss, the best Spartan unit cards out there and a comprehensive readme.

Thanks go to Andriyko for the model, Kanaric for the unit cards and Meretrix for the skin I built these upon.

This is the final release unless my PS skills take a drastic step for the better. I'd like to do some more work on the horizontal plume but there just isn't anything I can do at the moment.

They do look like the best out there, though I'd better mention that the comp. readme and unit cards don't seem to be with the zip, any chance of uploading them on this thread, thanks for the good work.

Historically speaking, the 'overhand' shown here is 'half-correct'. The Spartan phalanx went into battle with the front rows holding the spear at the hip, while the back rows held theirs overhand. By and large, I think it would be more historical to have them held at the hip, since the front was the most important aspect of the 'phalanx thrust'. Those in the back rows could also throw their spears, but the resources I've seen mention that those in the back were often 'injured or killed' by the point on the other end of the spears from the front rows being pushed back into them.
When you think of it, this makes logical sense, since a hip-held spear would result in a much stronger hold/grip on the weapon..possibly even with both hands, or at least one to guide and steady/position it. A overhead hold would be weak, impossible to guide well, and could easily be knocked aside by an opponent, some's helmet, etc.

Sparta was also the first Greek city, to adapt to the macedonian phalanx. They used shorter versions of the sarissa. The old Greek phalanx, first two ranks held thier xystons out horizontally, the rear ranks held them overhand, in anticipation. As Sparta, was the only Greek city, that could perform a charge with a phalanx, and maintain formation, they would often crush the enemies phalanx, and break through. The front two ranks spears would often break, and they would switch to swords, their comrades behind them, held thier spears overhand, so they could jab out at the enemy behind thier allies. Problem is, Spartans had a aspis shield, which left only one hand free for the xyston. Also, thier interlocked shields, could be used to guide the thrust of the spear.

    Hey! They look great. :happy

Did you actually add a new animation to the unit? They are holding the spear different now as far as I can see in sabaku's last picture.

They're holding their spear at completely the wrong place to use it overhand ... :blink

Well, I downloaded and examined the .rar and everything seems to be there. Perhaps your download was corrupted somehow. Try downloading it again.
