Re: How do I get dread?
So other than personal preferences, why do you need/want more than a very few of your generals to have dread?
Your faction leader will tend to reflect the overall rule of your realm. If you have a large number of generals performing dreadful tasks, it must be by the ruler's command. The same with a large number of generals performing chivalrous tasks.
Why do you think that King Arthur (in the fictional literature) is considered chivalrous? Because he had his knights performing chivalrous tasks!
The truth is that it is very difficult to stray far from 0 except your ruler who will tend to be dreadful without a great deal of effort.
Why? Because a good campaign will have each of your generals performing both chivalrous and dreadful tasks. Look at p15 of the manual. Some basic tasks are (by no means a complete list):
Dreadful tasks:
d1) executing prisoners (ransom refused does not count, I believe)
d2) administering a city when an assasin/spy is produced
d3) General in battle with overwhelming advantage
d4) in army or settlement with a superior performing dreadful tasks
d5) exterminating the population of a settlement
Chivalrous tasks:
c1) releasing prisoners
c2) not overtaxing the people as a governor
c3) completing the construction of civic buildings
c4) participating in successful crusades (need not actually be in army taking target settlement
c4) occupying a settlement
