Default How do I get dread?

I've played several campaigns and I noticed it was far harder to earn your generals dread than Chivalry, does anyone experience this as well cuz it's getting me pretty freaked out having all these extremely 'righteous' generals. Maybe that's cuz I'm constantly on crusade, and I rarely attack other Christian factions, only when the need is there (Milanese dogs)

I have however seen that faction leaders seem to be more susceptible for dread, especially when deploying a large amount of assassin's.

anyone plz tell me what I'm doing wrong?

So other than personal preferences, why do you need/want more than a very few of your generals to have dread?

Your faction leader will tend to reflect the overall rule of your realm. If you have a large number of generals performing dreadful tasks, it must be by the ruler's command. The same with a large number of generals performing chivalrous tasks.

Why do you think that King Arthur (in the fictional literature) is considered chivalrous? Because he had his knights performing chivalrous tasks!

The truth is that it is very difficult to stray far from 0 except your ruler who will tend to be dreadful without a great deal of effort.

Why? Because a good campaign will have each of your generals performing both chivalrous and dreadful tasks. Look at p15 of the manual. Some basic tasks are (by no means a complete list):

    Dreadful tasks:
d1) executing prisoners (ransom refused does not count, I believe)

d2) administering a city when an assasin/spy is produced

d3) General in battle with overwhelming advantage

d4) in army or settlement with a superior performing dreadful tasks

d5) exterminating the population of a settlement

    Chivalrous tasks:

    c1) releasing prisoners

c2) not overtaxing the people as a governor

c3) completing the construction of civic buildings

c4) participating in successful crusades (need not actually be in army taking target settlement

    c4) occupying a settlement

they're useful for gaining even more experience for your troops and command stars for your generals

also, releasing helps your reputation and relation with the other factions (slightly)

duda -- I was really just trying to answer the OP. I do not think I gave a valuation opinion as to the merit of any actions. To address your comment -- If you are wanting a ceasefire, perhaps releasing prisoners is one step in that process. It just depends. I would certainly not release prisoners if I am nearly losing my battles and my opposing faction(s) have a far larger economy.

Also, by releasing prisoners -- the AI seems incapable of demobalizing any units (and he seldom retrains). Let him continue to pay upkeep on partial units that are not a threat. It is the same with enemy naval units. Also, if the units are deep in his territory, there is a good chance they will turn rebel. He will then need to clean up his own backyard.

A side note (perhaps a bit cruel): It is a bit amusing to see a great quantity of 5 or 7 point navies that cannot merge because of admiral ranks float aimlessly, cost upkeep, and never seam to be retrained.

I have to say I experience the exact opposite of what you do my last 6 faction leaders have 10 dread and all my family members that I use have a dread over 6 but I execute, exterminate, and assassinate all who oppose me

Releasing gives you chivalry, and I just don't want my generals to execute. right now though, I tend to ransom because I need the money, and since they usually decline, you can still execute without become dreadfull.
