I was facing this problem when I maxed out all the graphic options in the video options...

Apparently, my video card -EVGA 8800 GTS 320Mb nVidia overclocked- can not handle Shadows set to Extreme.

Try manipulating the settings and see if you can get anywhere with that.

I set the shadows to high and it worked like it should.
